WES Piano Festival 08/09

by Whitney Wasden

This year’s Piano Festival was an awesome success!  We had about 70 participants in the competition.  Thanks to all who participated and volunteered.  We couldn’t have done it without you!
This year we tried using assigned practice rooms for participants and it went well.  Due to the great college students who helped all day and Dr. Van der Beek’s great planning, the event was very organized and ran smoothly.  The lunch for the volunteers was also delicious (special thanks to Leslie Denson for organizing that).
Each year it seems like the afternoon recital gets more and more impressive.  Our winners were well prepared and performed with ease.  It was an enjoyable concert with a fun variety of music to hear.  The winners got to take home a beautiful trophy as well as some nice cash awards.  And we loved hearing how they were going to spend their money!
Our judges were also incredible and we’re so grateful to them!  Dr. Regina Yeh did a masterclass for the college students the day before the festival.  It’s always neat to learn from another amazing teacher.  We’re so glad she could make it to Utah to be with us for the weekend.
Well, hopefully all the participants and volunteers will use their free ice cream coupons.  Remember they expire at the end of next February so use them soon!  I’ve got to go use mine still and summer sounds like a great time to eat cold ice cream… yum!  We hope to see you all next year at the next Weber State University Piano Festival!

Performing Opportunity in Weber State Union Building! (Involvement with the school)

by Rosann Owen

We got an invitation from Debbie Murphy who is the College Academic Advisor of the College of Arts and Humanities requesting the piano students to perform on Monday, January 26, 2008 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the Union's fireplace lounge. It was for Arts and Humanities emphasis week. Three of our piano students were willing and able to perform. Edward Poston, Emily Inderrieden, and Rosann Owen. It was an awesome experience. We were able to share our talent and have a good performance experience at the same time. It was a good experience because we were able to play in a place with people listening (instead of a lonely practice room). :)

Playing in Retirement Center (Community Service)

by Amy Talbot

In 22 November 2008, we were able to get a group together to go to the retirement center and perform for all the sweet elderly people. It was such a great experience to play for them. They really appreciated us, and they were a great audience. Then after we were done performing, we got to meet and talk to everyone. One nice gentleman had tears in his eyes as he thanked us for coming. Being able to see how happy they were, made the whole experience so special for all of us!

New Steinway and Sons piano in our practice room!!!

by Shing Yau Kai

Take a look at our new piano. This is a 7-foot long Steinway and Sons piano. It is now in the "Yamaha Room". Let me give you a tour.

This is the Yamaha Room. Let us go in.

Opening the door.

Here is our new Steinway~!!

Two more 7-foot Steinways came straight from New York last semester. One went into Dr. V's office, and the other one went into Dr. Yang's office. The old Steinway in Dr. V's office became one of our practice pianos, and Dr. Yang's old Steinway went into Lydia Wu's office. So now, all our pianos are Steinways.

A Day with Ms. Nelita True (Interschool activity)

by Rosann Owen

October 27th 2008

The Weber State MTNA Chapter was able to have Nelita True, a world famous pedagogue and pianist, come to our university! We invited piano teachers in the community as well as piano students at the University of Utah to join this special event. She gave a master class where 6 of our students preformed well for her. We were all amazed on her knowledge and her fun personality. Later that afternoon Ms. True lectured on Bach’s two and three part inventions. She gave us her insights on the pieces. She has done a lot of research about how to teach students to play the two and three part inventions. It was a great day for our chapter! We are so grateful that Nelita True was willing and able to come visit us!

08 UMTA State Conference

by Shing Yau Kai

State Conference was fun! We all learned a lot from the conference! The Weber State students were all very involved in the conference.
On the first day of the conference we were awarded "Greatest Percentage of Members attending UMTA State Conference" (In fact, we had 100% of our member registered!). Our president Emily Inderrieden and several of our other members were present to receive the award. Four of our members, Shing Yau, Fan-Ya, Cindy and Miranda participated in the UMTA Piano Competition and played on the first day. That was such a special experience for them. Emily, Whitney, Leslie and Sydnee volunteered to be the hosts during the competition. We had a nice dinner at a local restaurant and had a chance to get to know each other more and had some fun after the long conference day.
On the second day of conference we all went to the Nelita True Master Class. Nic from Weber State was one of the 4 performers. We all learned a lot from Miss True. In the afternoon, we had lunch with students from other collegiate chapters including the U of U
and BYU. We met some new friends and enjoyed the afternoon. Our pedagogy class members Linda, Rosann, Emily, Whitney, Shing Yau and Alyson presented a lecture at 2:45 pm. Their topic was "Group Teaching: Chaos or Harmony?" They did a very good job. The video was very entertaining too. Byron played the "Black Key" Etude in the conference recital at 5 pm.  It was a great conference, and the Treblemakers enjoyed participating in it.
Also, Nic and his trio passed the state level of the UMTA trio competition. They progressed to the South-West division.
