Mission Statement  
The Department of Foreign1 Languages2 promotes global awareness3 and intercultural understanding4 by providing instruction5 in various languages6. We prepare majors7 and minors8 to function9 effectively10 in a foreign language by offering courses11 in literature12, culture13, linguistics14, pedagogy15 and language for professional purposes16.

Functions:
    Second language speakers will be able to function in a number of ways. The National Standards for Foreign Language Leaning include the ability to: Communicate with spoken and written language, and both conversationally as well as in presentational formats; interact with other Cultures and appreciate other perspectives on products and practices; Compare the grammar and culture of the language being studied with one's own native language; Connect the study of language with other disciplines and enhance our understanding of art, history, music, and the sciences, etc.; and make Communities with people and ideas representative of the foreign language and its culture (for more information on the Standards see www.ACTFL.org).

Student Learning Outcomes

Students graduating with a major in FL from WSU will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate speaking and listening proficiency in the language they are studying.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to write in different styles
  3. Demonstrate a command of grammar, mechanics and the ability to use a variety of sentence structures to express their ideas.
  4. Analyze cultural products and literary works in the language.
  5. Demonstrate an awareness of the similarities and the differences among the cultures of the language being studied as they compare to other cultures.
