Weber State University
Department of Foreign Languages
Mission Statement
The Department of Foreign1 Languages2 promotes global awareness3 and intercultural understanding4 by providing instruction5 in various languages6. We prepare majors7 and minors8 to function9 effectively10 in a foreign language by offering courses11 in literature12, culture13, linguistics14, pedagogy15 and language for professional purposes16.

Foreign:
In our mission statement the word "foreign" is a blunt yet traditional metaphor meaning any language other than English. There are no better or more precise terms to describe a "Department of Languages Other than English". For example, Modern Languages does not include Latin or Greek, both of which have been taught in our department. World Languages implies that merely regional or national languages, such as ASL or Catalan would not be included. So we use the traditional Foreign Languages, although again ASL and Native-American languages, and even Spanish are not in any real sense foreign in the United States.
At Weber State University, English and ESL, including English language and literature, are taught in the Department of English and Literature. All other human languages are taught in the Department of Foreign Languages.
