Information and Policies for 2007-2008

My Music Philosophy

Taking piano lessons develops a student’s musical talent and cultivates a life-long hobby of enjoyment. Students can gain knowledge and coordination while creating beautiful music for self-expression at the same time. I believe that music study should be fun and meaningful!

Student Expectations

Students are requested to come to lessons with hands washed, nails trimmed, and hair pulled back. Gum chewing is not permitted at piano lessons. Please be on time to your lesson. Time will not be taken from the lesson of the next student to accommodate late arrivals of the previous student.

Practice Expectations

Students are expected to practice 5 days a week. The length of practice will be determined by the students’ level and will be decided at the first lesson. A parent should monitor their child’s practicing and assist the student if needed.

Student Equipment

Every student must have a tuned piano. (No half sized keyboards). Also a metronome is required. A recommended piano tuner is Paul Stephens Piano Service (801) 392-3921. Your piano must be tuned no less than twice a year.

Parent Involvement

I encourage parents to observe their child’s weekly lesson. This way the parent will know exactly what the student should be practicing the next week.

Private and Group Classes Offered

Private: Elementary level students: 30 minutes

                 Intermediate level students: 45 minutes

                 Advanced level students: 1 hour

Group: Group classes:  1 hour every week (unless noted otherwise)

Motivational environment where students learn piano with peers. Great way for students to improve performance skills. Besides learning piano they play unique piano games.

Kindermusik class (Beginning students ages 4-7)

Teen Partners (45 minute class… 30 min. private plus 15 min. with teen duet partner)

 Performance Class

This class is held to prepare students for the upcoming recitals. Students can meet a couple weeks before the recital and perform for each other. Also at the performance class students will learn about composers and music history. The performance class schedule is located on the studio calendar.

Recitals

There will be 4 recitals held each year: Halloween Recital, Christmas Recital, Spring Recital and a Summer Recital.  Music should be memorized. Students must dress appropriately (no jeans, short skirts, t-shirts, flip-flops etc). Small children over the age or 5 are welcome, but with parental supervision. Parents should be prepared to remove little guest, if necessary, to avoid distracting a performance. Also please arrive at least 5-10 minutes early to each recital.

 Tuition

45 minutes…….…..$60/month

1 Hour…………………$80/month

Kindermusick……..$40/month

§  Tuition cost includes all the preparation for my teaching and for the professional conferences I attend to receive additional training and ideas to improve the studio.

Lesson Swapping

If you cannot make your scheduled lesson one week, you have the option of swapping times with another student. You will receive a lesson swap schedule with students’ lesson day, time and phone number. You don’t have to be on the swap lesson schedule if that is your preference.

Missed Lessons

If a lesson was missed due to illness or an unplanned emergency and a lesson swap was unavailable then the student may have a make-up lesson. I will offer make-up lessons on the last Saturday of each month. See calendar for make-up lesson times. Make-up lessons must be schedule in advance.

Students may be dismissed for any of the following reasons:

§  Nonpayment of tuition or other expenses

§  Repeated failure to attend lessons

§  Unacceptable behavior/ attitude

§  Repeated failure to prepare for lessons.

Summer Lessons

Private lessons are encouraged during the summer. Students who take during the summer have first choice at choosing their lesson time schedule for the next school year. Also I will offer various exciting summer camps such as composition, theory, and ensemble classes for students.
