Faculty Senate - 2 - November 20 , 19971. ROLL CALL
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion: To accept the minutes of October 16, 1997.
Made: Paul Joines Second: Mark Biddle
Outcome: The motion passed unanimously
3. STUDENT HOUSING
President Thompson - Weber State is considering building additional student housing. He is asking for feedback from faculty, staff and students on whether or not we should build new student housing units, and if we build new units, where should they be built. Construction would be for two or three story apartment style housing units totaling 400-500 beds. He has met with faculty, students and the Board of Trustees. The market demand is currently around 90% occupancy in the community and above 90% occupancy on campus. Pros and cons of whether to build new student housing units and pros and cons on various locations were discussed.
A straw vote was taken for the various proposed locations:
South of the Dee Events Center 0
South of HPHP 0
Football Practice Field 25
Northeast Parking of the Dee Events Center 114. PPM 4-2
Language clarification for PPM 4-2. Students who started instruction under the quarter system may elect to use either a quarter or semester catalog for their general education requirements, and a different catalog for their major/minor/emphasis/concentration requirements. Students will be allowed to choose a maximum of two catalogs. The last sentence was added as clarification.
5. ADMISSIONS, STANDARDS AND STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE - John Thaeler, Chair
The terms "proficiency" and "competence" are confusing. These terms have been dropped. The committee proposes that additional information be added to PPM 5-5:
Students requiring developmental course work will be charged an additional fee for each term until they have satisfactorily completed:
English 0960, Developmental Writing with a grade of C (2.00) or above; OR The English Placement Test (available through the Testing Center); OR The English ACT with a score of 17 or higher;
AND
Math 1010 Intermediate Algebra, with a grade of C (2.00) or above, OR The Math Placement Test (available through the Testing Center) with a score high enough to be placed into Math QL 1030, QL 1040, QL 1050, or QL 1080 OR The Math ACT with a score of 23 or higher.
Faculty Senate - 3 - November 20, 1997
Once both the English and math requirements have been met, as outlined above, the developmental fee will be removed automatically.
Motion: To accept the above addition to PPM 5-5.
Made: Karen Dewey Second: John Sohl
Outcome: The voting was unanimous.
6. MATH 105/1010 - Math 105 has been renumbered Math 1010. It will not be remedial. It is a prerequisite to quantitative literacy.
7. CURRICULUM AND GENERAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE - Bob Higginson, Chair
APPLIED LABORATORY MATHEMATICS AND LABORATORY STATISTICS - Yas Simonian representing. Discipline specific math requirement for the A.A.S. degree. Made: Judith Mitchell Second: Kathy Herndon

8. HUMANITIES ON THE INTERNET: CULTURE, CONTENT, AND ACCESS - Carol Hansen representing. Concerns: Depth? How is it tied together? Time involvement of five faculty members. What are the connections among disciplines? What role does the advisement center play?
Interdisciplinary will be the future of general education. This course is an impressive statement of collaboration.
Motion: To accept the Humanities on the Internet: Culture, Content, and Access course.
Made: Julie Arbuckle Second: Lynda Money
Outcome: 21 - For 7 - Against
9. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE POLICY STATEMENT, WORKING MODEL AND B.S. DEGREE REQUIREMENT COURSE PROPOSAL FORM - Bob Higginson representing.
