1. ROLL CALL
2. MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO KAREN BEAVER
Gerry Hansen delivered a tribute to Dr. Karen W. Beaver outlining her contributions to Weber State University, the Nursing Department, her involvement with state and national committees, as well as her association and affiliation with practical nursing programs and various state boards of nursing. She was a member of the Weber State University faculty for 34 years.
A moment of silence was held in her honor.3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion: To accept the minutes of November 20, 1997
Made: Judith Mitchell Second: Lynda Money
Outcome: The motion passed unanimously4. CURRICULUM AND GENERAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE - Bob Higginson, Chair
A. ATHLETIC TRAINING MAJOR - Monica Mize, Jack Loughton, Joel Bass representing.
Questions About Major - As trainers will they also be teaching? They will be more marketable with a teaching degree. A minor in Education is offered with this major. Could this be an emphasis area? No. Why do we want to establish this major? By 2004 internships will not be accepted. Students will need to be certified as Athletic Trainers from an accredited college or university. In the future high schools will be required to have Athletic Trainers. Utah requires certification. Students can do an internship and then go to a graduate school to become an Athletic Trainer or they can receive a degree and be certified with an Athletic Trainer major.
Grade Requirements - Does the 2.85 GPA refer to the student's cumulative GPA? Yes, this refers to the student's cumulative GPA. Senate members felt this was a stringent requirement. How was the 2.85 determined? Most schools in the region require a similar GPA. They want to maintain a high standard. They also feel this will limit the number of students in the program. Does this standard (2.85 GPA) promote grade inflation? The Chemistry Department set a similar standard and found that it did promote grade inflation.
Resources - If the number of majors reaches 100 what are the resources? The program is here. This will be a shifting from an internship to a major. Courses will be converted. Approximately 70% of the curriculum for this major is currently being taught by faculty.
Motion: To adopt the Athletic Trainer Major as a course of study at Weber State.
Made: Judith Mitchell Second: John SohlMotion to Amend: Adopt the Athletic Trainer Major as presented with the following change:
Change the requirement of a 2.85 cumulative GPA for students in the major to

B. GEOGRAPHY/GEOSCIENCE - Adolph Yonkee representing
Under the quarter system a student could only use 1 class from the earth science group, which included classes having both Geogr and Geosci prefixes to fulfill the physical sciences general education requirement. The prefix system does
not work for earth science courses, which have both Geosci and Geogr prefixes. The proposed change in wording would remedy this situation. The following change is proposed for the listing of general education classes and counting of physical science general education credit.
Geography*
Geogr PS 1010 Physical GeographyGeoscience*
Geosci PS 1030 Earthquakes and Volcanoes
Geosci PS 1110 Dynamic Earth: Physical Geology
Geosci PS 1130 Introduction to Meteorology
Geosci PS 1350 Principles of earth Science
Geosci PS 1540 Environmental Geosciences
Geosci PS 1600 The Fossil Record* Only one course from either the Geography (Geogr) or the Geosciences (Geosci) areas in the above list may be used to fulfill the physical sciences general education requirement.
This statement puts back something we have had in place for many years.
Motion: To accept the proposed change in wording.
Made: Warren Hill Second: John Sohl
Outcome: The voting was unanimous.ADJOURN:
The meeting adjourned at 3:46 p.m.
