MINUTES
Bruce Christensen: Moved to approve the minutes
from the January 18, 2001 meeting.
Second: Gary Dohrer
Outcome: The minutes were approved.
ARCC
Dale Ostlie, Chair of the Academic Resource and Computing
Committee presented revisions to their Proposal and Funding Process.
Changes in the process include: A final report for each project will be
required; the Dean’s signature is required regardless of whether or not
the college provides funding for the proposal; Colleges are asked to rank
each proposal in priority.
Computer support by ARCC and/or RSPG was discussed. RSPG does not want to fund computers. Gary Godfrey, Chair of the Research, Scholarship and Professional Growth Committee will be invited to Executive Committee to discuss this issue.
Item #4 under "Criteria for Funding" was changed to read: Projects
specifically related to faculty research or scholarly activities are not
supported. Such projects should be directed to the Research,
Scholarship, and Professional Growth Committee or an outside funding
agency.
Wording on the signature page was changed to read:
Department Chair: I have reviewed this project. If the budget page indicates financial support from the department, I agree to commit those funds to this project.
College Dean: I have reviewed this project. If the budget page indicates financial support from the college, I agree to commit those funds to this project.
MOTION
Bruce Christensen: Moved to forward to the Faculty
Senate for the February 15, 2001 meeting the Proposal and
Funding Process from ARCC.
Second: Dan Schroeder
Outcome: The motion passed unanimously.
FALL BREAK
Dee Hansen, WSUSA President, presented a Fall Break proposal. Their proposal
reads:
(1) Allow a two-day Fall Break on the first Thursday and Friday of October.
(2) Provide an additional day off for Thanksgiving (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving).
(3) Begin Fall Semester on the Wednesday prior to each currently scheduled academic year.
President Thompson indicated that calendar decisions eventually come to President’s Council. It would be helpful for President’s Council to have information from the students and information from the faculty.
A memo from Gene Sessions was distributed listing reasons he was opposed to the Fall Break proposal.
Concerns included: Students will lose another week of summer earning potential by adding days to the semester in August; little time between summer school and fall semester; disruption and shortening of lab sections.
The Executive Committee suggested that the students consider a one-day break on a Friday in October as an additional day off.
MOTION
Bruce Christensen: Moved to have Dee Hansen gather
more information from students and faculty. Have students and
faculty say "yes" or "no" to a Fall Break,
not just indicate those in favor of the break. Take the
proposal to President’s Council suggesting a one-day break
mid October on Friday and see if the one additional day off
would affect accreditation and class instruction time. If
approved by President’s Council, take it to the Faculty
Senate as an information item.
Second: Marie Kotter
Outcome: The motion passed unanimously.

BOTANY College of Science, Botany - Teaching Major and Teaching Minor. This proposal was approved by the University Council on Teacher Education. This major requires 142 hours. This is one option for a certain set of students. There is also another option within the hour guidelines. The other option is a Biology Teaching Composite. This option was created for students who are junior or senior level who have decided they want a teaching certification.

Teaching Minor for Botany.
