PROGRAM CHANGES
WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY
Submission Date: February 28, 2011
College: Applied Science and Technology
Department: Computer and Electronics Engineering Technology
Program Title: Computer Engineering Technology
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
CET AAS Degree. The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree prepares graduates to specify, install, operate, troubleshoot, and modify computers, automated programmable controllers, and electronic systems. It is designed to give the student fundamental knowledge and basic skills in robotics, automation, electronic manufacturing, fabrication, testing, and troubleshooting. In particular, the Computer Engineering Technology AAS program is a combination of software and hardware courses supporting electronic devices, communications, and embedded computer systems.
CET BS Degree. The Bachelor of Science (BS) degree is designed to continue a student's education beyond the associate's degree level. It is intended to provide the student with knowledge and skills in problem solving, critical thinking, project management, team building, and engineering research to identify, evaluate, analyze, and solve complex computer and electronic related technical problems. In particular, the Computer Engineering Technology BS program is a combination of advanced software and hardware courses supporting embedded microcontrollers.

JUSTIFICATION:
Part of the proposal that was submitted to the Board of Regents for the bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering (EE) included the promise that we would eliminate the degrees in Computer Engineering Technology. This request is for the elimination of those degrees to fulfill that promise that was made when the EE degree was approved last spring. There is also a need to eliminate these degrees as we lost two and a third faculty members from a year ago and we do not have the staffing to offer both the Computer Engineering Technology degrees and the Electronics Engineering technology degrees. However, this program elimination would not eliminate any further faculty positions.
All of the courses required for both degrees, AAS and BS, will continue to be taught for the next two years such that students in either degree program can complete their degrees. The program elimination will be announced in appropriate classes in the Department along with an open forum where students can ask questions. Further, all students in the CET program will be notified by letter that these degrees will be phased out and letting them know that they have two years to complete the CEET courses that either degree requires. Further, current CET students can transfer to the EET programs with no loss of credit as the programs are very similar.
INFORMATION PAGE
Attach a copy of the present program from the current catalog and a revised version (exactly as you wish it to appear in the catalog).
Did this program change receive unanimous approval within the Department? _X_ If not, what are the major concerns raised by the opponents?
Explain any effects this program change will have on program requirements or enrollments in other departments including the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Program. In the case of similar offerings or affected programs, you should include letters from the departments in question stating their support or opposition to the proposed program.
It is expected that many of the students currently in either CET degree program will transfer into the EET program. Since the requirements in the EET program outside of the CEET courses are essentially the same, the net effect on enrollments in other departments is expected to be minimal.
Indicate the number of credit hours for course work within the program. (Do not include credit hours for General Education, SI, Diversity, or other courses unless those courses fulfill requirements within the proposed program.)

Indicate the number of credit hours for course work within the current program. (Do not include credit hours for General Education, SI, Diversity, or other courses unless those courses fulfill requirements within the current program.) ____
For the AAS degree, it is 50 CH and for the BS degree it is 99 CH.
