The main focus of this course is to help the student learn the role and functions of the nurse leader, explore and examine personal and professional characteristics of the nurse leader, prepare to lead through principle-based leadership, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams ultimately advancing the profession of nursing through change and anticipation of nursing’s future.

This course will be concept based and aligns with the SON program outcomes.
This course will also support the National League of Nursing Standards and Criteria for Baccalaureate Degree Programs in Nursing. It also meets the requirements for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

 

1.      Critically evaluate expectations for the interdisciplinary team and develop nursing department and unit care delivery operations.

 

2.      Analyze leadership and management skills that allow the student to engage in conversations and negotiations that are crucial to the success of the team, that lead to cohesive practice and positive ongoing relationships.

 

3.      Analyze and understand clinical and operational leadership and management strategies that incorporate evidence-based practice.

 

4.      Apply leadership and management skills that create cohesive health care teams that lead to productive change and integral collaboration between other health care disciplines and nursing that lead to quality outcomes.
   

5.      Understand and apply the principles of legal and regulatory laws and policies that result in safe patient care delivery and an equitable workplace environment.

 

6.      Utilize technology and data to support management and clinical decision-making.
