This course focuses on a basic understanding of how multiple sources of evidence are developed and integrated into an evidence-based nursing environment. These sources include the formal research process, quality improvement data, clinical judgment, inter-professional perspectives, and patient preference. This course will examine the knowledge and skills required for translating reliable evidence into evidence-based practice and clinical judgments. The course will support the establishment of a research-base for the student’s personal nursing practice, as well as influence the continual improvement of healthcare quality and safety.

This course will be concept based and aligns with the new SON program outcomes. This course will also support the National League of Nursing Standards and Criteria for Baccalaureate Degree Programs in Nursing. It also meets the requirements for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice.

C.                 COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course focuses on a basic understanding of how multiple sources of evidence are developed and integrated into an evidence-based nursing environment. These sources include the formal research process, quality improvement data, clinical judgment, inter-professional perspectives, and patient preference. This course will examine the knowledge and skills required for translating reliable evidence into evidence-based practice and clinical judgments. D.                 COURSE OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

 

1.      Integrate evidence, clinical judgment, and patient preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based nursing practices as related to patient outcomes of care.

 

2.      Participate in the process of retrieval, appraisal, and synthesis of multiple forms of evidence, which includes evidence developed and/or published by inter-professional healthcare teams, to improve patient outcomes in all healthcare settings.

 

3.      Examine the role of the registered nurse in the establishment of an evidence-based clinical environment. This includes the identification, and appraisal of research, - quality improvement data, established institutional/ national clinical practice standards, and patient/family preferences in the delivery of optimal healthcare.

 

4.      Examine processes associated with the development, implementation, and assessment of an evidence-based innovation within a healthcare environment; processes include strategies for planned-change, methods to measure outcomes, and dissemination of evidence-based practice findings.

 

5.      Compare and discuss both national organizations and institutional structures designed to support healthcare quality and safety measures, monitor outcomes of care processes, and advocate for the protection of human subjects in the conduct of research.

 

6.      Develop the basic knowledge and skill required to locate, retrieve, and appraise the credibility of informational sources of evidence relative to a clinical nursing question, including but not limited to navigating Internet resources and databases.
