Course description (exactly as it will appear in the catalog, including prerequisites):

In this course, students will learn theory and concepts in the nursing care of chronically ill patients, as well as illness implications for patients and families. The evidence-based family caregiving and symptom management is a major focus and basis for nursing interventions with patients and families. The course will address variations of care, the increased complexity, and the increased use of healthcare resources inherent in caring for patients who are vulnerable. Focus will be on patients with chronic conditions and disabilities affecting functional status and family relationships.

Justification for the new course or for changes to an existing course. (Note: Justification should emphasize academic rationale for the change or new course. This is particularly important for courses requesting upper-division status.)

This course is the second course in a series of complex patient care courses. The first course will be taken by students during the associate degree program. This course will provide a more advanced focus on patient care for the baccalaureate nursing student. It will focus on evidence based nursing care that will prepare students to provide nursing care to complex patients in multiple care settings.

This course will be concept based and aligns with the SON program outcomes.
This course will also support the National League of Nursing Standards and Criteria for Baccalaureate Degree Programs in Nursing. It also meets the requirements for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice.
