JUSTIFICATION: As part of the ever-evolving nature of Health Promotion, one aspect of this discipline is becoming a much more prominent component, Wellness Coaching. Wellness Coaching involves a direct one-on-one interaction between coach and client. Behavioral scientists have shown that one-on-one coaching is among the most effective approaches to helping people make and sustain improvements in their lives. Organizations that incorporate wellness coaching programs into their culture have reported sustainable improvements in key areas including: improved well-being of individuals, improved organizational health, reduced absenteeism, increased productivity, improved occupational safety, higher staff retention, increased savings in healthcare and high return on investment.

Our program already has several classes that focus on ways that health promoters work with larger groups in communities, schools, worksites, and in the clinical settings. Currently, we have no courses that help students learn how to work one-on-one with people who want to improve their health on an individual basis. This course provides theory, methods, and processes having to do with the one-on-one approach. By offering this course, we give the students the opportunity to learn new skills and find new tools that will help them work with people to enhance their health and well-being.
