Program Title:  Bachelor of Arts in Dance

 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The primary goals of the Dance area of the Department of Performing Arts are: 1) To develop

aesthetically aware and artistically discriminating citizens; 2) To promote cultural understanding of ourselves and others through the study of dance; 3) To encourage appreciation of dance through critical thinking; 4) To engage the community in a range of dance experiences; 5) To foster an understanding of and engagement in the creative process through dance performance, improvisation, choreography, pedagogical studies, technology, and collaborative endeavors; 6) To provide the guidance, class work, and experience necessary to prepare teachers, performing artists, and scholars; 7) To prepare students for careers or advanced study that require creativity, collaboration, and an understanding of the human experience as explored in the study of dance; 8) To provide rigorous dance training. Dance majors follow a program based on growth beginning with foundational theory courses, technique courses appropriate to each dancer's ability, and a culminating senior project.

JUSTIFICATION:

The Dance Area is revising the BA in Dance for the first time since its creation in 1997. The adjustments are designed to more clearly reflect the Nation Schools of Dance (NASD) guidelines, to better serve our major as they make they way through the program, and to prepare them for emerging changes and expectations in the field of dance.

The Dance Area wishes to delete the Minor Requirement for the BA in Dance. We have found that many of our students vacillate between minors and end up staying longer than the time needed to complete their degree. We would like to replace the minor with a requirement for dance majors to take six to ten credit hours in courses outside dance as a means of research related to their senior thesis course work, Creative Synthesis (DANC 4700). This will allow for more flexibility in terms of specific classes and will allow students to decide on these classes as they form ideas for thesis subject matter.  Students will present to advisor’s their proposed courses and will be subject to approval by the advisors.

Bachelor of Arts programs without Minor Requirements within WSU Department of Performing Arts:

·         Music

·         Music Education

·         Musical Theater

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science in Dance without Minor Requirement within USHE:

·         SUU- Choice of Minor or self-selected Enrichment Courses

·         UVU-No Minor Requirement for Dance or Dance Ed. Major

(University of Utah only offers Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Utah State University does not offer a Dance Major)

Additional Private:

·         BYU-No Minor Requirement for BA in Dance

Removal of the minor and addition of thesis research courses leaves some credit hours for us to better educate our dance majors.  Thus, we propose the following additional requirements:

1)      Raise the credit hours of our Intermediate and Advanced levels of Ballet and Modern Technique. This change is long overdue and is in keeping with the Curriculum Policy and Procedures manual.

All technique classes are currently listed worth one credit hour; however, our 2000 and 3000 level Modern Dance and Ballet technique classes meet for 50% longer.  Specifically, Ballet II and Ballet III (DANC 2470 & 3470) and Modern Dance II & Modern Dance III (DANC 2490 & 3490) meet 4.5 hours per week and have requirements of written concert critiques.  In contrast, Ballet I (DANC 1470), Modern I (DANC 1200) meet three hours per week. Raising these four classes to 1.5 credit hours will be more equitable and will reflect the extra Friday of technique class.  Friday classes are reserved for special topics and allow faculty to supplement dance majors’ education with emerging trends in the field.  Please note: our revamped major will include this raise in the overall plan.

UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE POLICY AND PROCEDURES MANUAL

SECTION 5 - CREDIT HOURS/SUBSTANTIVE COURSE PROPOSALS

Revised: 6-9-10

CREDIT HOURS - The unit by which an institution may measure its course work. The number of credit hours assigned to a course is usually defined by the number of hours per week in class and the number of weeks in the session. One credit hour is usually assigned to a class that meets fifty minutes a week over a full semester; in laboratory, fieldwork, drawing, music, practical arts, physical education, or similar type of instruction, one credit hour is assigned for a session that meets two or three hours a week during a full semester.

CREDIT RATIOS - Academic credit is a measure of the total time commitment required of a typical student in a particular course of study. Total time consists of three components: (1) time spent in class; (2) time spent in laboratory, studio, fieldwork, or other scheduled activity; (3) time devoted for reading, studying, problem solving, writing, or preparation. One full-semester credit hour is assigned in the following ratio of component hours per week devoted to the course of study: (1) lecture courses – one contact hour for each credit hour, (two hours of outside work implied); (2) laboratory or studio course – at least two contact hours for each credit hour, (one hour of outside preparation implied); (3) independent study – at least three hours of work per week for each credit hour.

2) Require two years of Moving Company (DANC 3910 & DANC 3911).

MC is our pre-professional dance company and carries a Community Based Learning (CBL) designation from the Community Involvement Center. Embedded within the MC course is in-depth learning about the choreographic process, performance experience, stage production, community involvement and interdisciplinary engagement. This is essential experience for a professional career; hence, the new requirement.

3) Require both semesters of Dance History.

With more of our majors moving on to graduate degrees it is important that their knowledge of dance history, global/ethnic forms as well as contemporary, is made more rigorous.

4) Narrow music and kinesiology options to insure students are properly prepared by requiring Music for Dance  (DANCE 1310) and Dance Kinesiology (DANC 2300).

The current class options for music and kinesiology do not prepare our majors for the specific needs for careers in dance.  We therefore would like to remove them and require the courses that serve that function well. This approach is taken in programs similar to ours in size.

5) Increase credit hour from one to two for Choreography Practicum (DANC 3520).

This course provides preparation for thesis work and requires students to rehearse dancers and produce a dance work for our main-stage production. Closer observation of Choreography Practicum students has shown that they work six to eight hours a week on their dance works (four hours of rehearsal; the rest on preparations). Two credit hours will be commensurate with student efforts.
