JUSTIFICATION:

Two current needs in visual arts education have prompted this proposed change.

The first is the additional licensing requirement of the Praxis Test from the State of Utah’s Board of Education and its corresponding implementation in the Moyes College of Education. The “Praxis Test” is a national assessment tool measuring a teacher candidate’s knowledge and comprehension in their content area; in this case visual arts. Mandated by the State, this exam must be passed by our teacher candidates prior to their student teaching practicum. The Art Praxis test is heavily weighted in Art

History, in particular 20th and 21st century art history. In the few years since being implemented, we have found this Praxis hurdle to be one of the more challenging for our art education teacher candidates. The students who have taken the test (some passed, some not) have indicated their desire for additional and appropriate training to assist in passing this licensing benchmark. It is anticipated that an additional art history class of Modern Art or Contemporary Art will be the most beneficial art history option toward passing the Praxis requirement.

Secondly, current pedagogical innovations in Arts Education demonstrate the added value of ‘integrated’ (side-by-side model) curricula in the K-12 classroom and in curriculum reform. In response, the WSU’s Arts Education methodology classes, ART 3515 and ART 3520 (Art Methods I & II) have adopted revised pedagogy. Inclusion of ARTH 3040 or ARTH 3050 best address the contextual needs within lesson planning and ‘visual literacy,’ both emphasized in the revised programming.
