PEP 3520L Curriculum and
Assessment Lab
(1)
This course will avail students a practicum opportunity to apply in an area K-12
school the theory learned and the curriculum prepared in the Curriculum and
Assessment PEP 3520 course. Students will develop lessons and assessments to
determine student learning and implement them in a teaching experience in the
school setting. Co-requisite Curriculum and Assessment PEP 3520
Justification for the new course or for changes to an existing course. (Note: Justification should emphasize academic rationale for the change or new course. This is particularly important for courses requesting upper-division status.)
As a result of combining content of the Curriculum Development and Instructional Strategies PEP 3520 course and the Assessment and Technology in Physical Education PEP 3610 courses three lectures hours are needed for theory discussions and curriculum and assessment preparation. Previously the lab portion was incorporated into both courses. This additional one hour lab will be required for students to implement their developed lessons and assessments in a K-12 physical education setting. The accreditation body, National Association for Sport and Physical Education, NASPE Standards for Initial Physical Education Teachers (Standards #.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 4.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 5.1, 2, 3) require students to 'develop' lesson plans and assessments and 'implement' them with K-12 students and to show evidence of this. The lab course will allow students to implement their plans and fulfill NASPE requirements.
INFORMATION PAGE
for substantive proposals only
1. Did this course receive unanimous approval within the Department?
true
If not, what are the major concerns raised by the opponents?
2. If this is a new course proposal, could you achieve the desired results by revising an existing course within your department or by requiring an existing course in another department?
We have deleted a course Assessment and Technology PEP 3610 (3) and combined the content with another course Curriculum and Assessment PEP 3520 (3). This combination is the revision we are seeking with the lab section PEP 3520L offering the practicum experience. No other course revision will offer this opportunity.
3. How will the proposed course differ from similar offerings by other departments? Comment on any subject overlap between this course and topics generally taught by other departments, even if no similar courses are currently offered by the other departments. Explain any effects that this proposal will have on program requirements or enrollments in other department. Please forward letters (email communication is sufficient) from all departments that you have identified above stating their support or opposition to the proposed course.
No other departments or
courses within our own department offer a practicum experience where physical
education lessons and assessments are the focus.
There will be no effect on other course enrollments in other departments or
courses as a result of this course.
4. Is this course required for certification/accreditation of a program?
yes
If so, a statement to that effect should appear in the justification and supporting documents should accompany this form.
5. For course proposals, e-mail a syllabus to Faculty Senate which should be sufficiently detailed that the committees can determine that the course is at the appropriate level and matches the description. There should be an indication of the amount and type of outside activity required in the course (projects, research papers, homework, etc.).
