Basic Overview of your Math 1210 writing project(s)
(Remember to hit refresh/reload when you visit this web page.)
- The end result of the project will be a paper (probably 3-6 pages) that you will write.
- Project 1 may be completed either on your own or in groups of two students. Students working in a group only need to turn in one paper.
- Project 2 may be completed either on your own or in groups of two-three students. Students working in a group only need to turn in one paper.
- We will not spend any class time working on this.
- The format of each project is as follows.
- You should imagine that you are a "mathematical contractor." (You are being hired to solve a problem using your mathematical knowledge.)
- You are being hired by a fictitious person who needs your help.
- This fictitious person will "send" you a letter explaining the problem.
- Your job is to write a response (letter) explaining the solution to this person's problem.
- Your solution/response will likely be between 3 and 6 pages (typed), but that is not set in stone.
- Your solution should be written in a way that a struggling Calc I student would find it relatively easy to follow/understand.
- Although it is important that you "get the math right," the quality of your writing is also of the utmost importance.
- On the course homepage, you can find a link to a guide on how to write a good "mathematical paper." (courtesy of Annalisa Crannell)
- You can find many examples of actual student solutions using the link on our course homepage. (also courtesy of Annalisa Crannell)
- Your project will be graded according to the following criteria.
- Although we will spend no class time on this, you are welcome to ask me for help outside of class.
