Journal #6: Chapters 37-46

Vocabulary:

I giggled with delight upon reading the following passage: “… she only demands from each of you, either one thing very clever, be it prose or vers, original or repeated; or two thing moderately clever; or three things very dull indeed…”

“Oh! very well,” exclaimed Miss Bates; “then I need not to be uneasy. ‘Three things very dull indeed.’ That will just do for me, you know…”

Emma could not resist.

“Ah! ma’am, but there may be a difficulty. Pardon me, but you will be limited as to number—only three at once.” (chapter 43)

I didn’t catch this insult at first, I had to go back to figure out the reason for Miss Bates being insulted. I’d also like to add how Emma was deeply affected by her actions after Mr. Knightley confronted her and how emotional he is in confronting her. This is just another situation where he steps in to put her into place except readers are able to see that he advises her because he truly loves her.

I believe Emma will grow closer to Knightley in the following chapters because she will miss his presence during this shocking time and because of their emotional display in chapter 43. She admires him and his assumptions, which have proven to be true,.
