Generations Paper

Description: Interview one woman from a generation previous to your own and then, in a 2-3 page paper (500 word minimum), compare and contrast her experiences and world views with your own.

Advice: read  "Tips for Interviewers"

Format: typed, double-spaced, 12 pica size; well-organized in terms of overall content and within paragraphs; free of spelling and gross grammatical errors

Heading: NO TITLE PAGE. The following should be on the first page, left hand side at the top:

Your Name
Date
Class #

Suggested Method:

  1. Ask questions of your informant in relationship to your own experiences--education, family background, experiences, etc.
  2. Take notes on the interview.
  3.  Free-write on your own experiences.
  4. Create the paper by reflecting on the similarities and/or differences between your own and your interviewee’s experiences, attitudes, understandings, etc.

Content Suggestions:

Report on how the interviewee’s life experiences in an area or two are similar to and/or different from your own. These areas could be, for example, family life, or education, or work, or political involvement. Then reflect on how some of the ideas you’ve considered in this course connect to the differences or similarities between you and the interviewee. What conclusions can you draw about any social/economic/political/legal/cultural changes in women's lives over the  past 20 or more years? What is your response to how her world view compares to your own? How does this relate to the differences/similarities in your experiences?
