Current Research Activities

My primary area of interest is health and well-being of children during the early years of life.  Starting from summer 2009, I have been working with two colleagues on an interdisciplinary project that focuses on preventing childhood obesity among low-income children and families in the Ogden-Weber Community Action Partnership (OWCAP) Head Start program.  The objectives of the project are to increase children’s physical activity, reduce sedentary media time, promote healthy eating, and inform teachers and parents of effective ways to prevent childhood obesity.  The project is funded by the Hemingway Collaborative Grant through Weber State University.

My research also includes studying the impact of culture, social changes, and economic development on children and families in different countries.  I am principal investigator of a research project that explores intergenerational effects of the one child policy on children and families in China.  The focus of the project is on parental attitudes and childrearing practices of  first-generation Chinese only children as well as developmental outcomes of their offspring.  Another research project I am now involved in compares perceptions of marriage and families among parents and children living in four countries (United States, Ecuador, China, and Turkey).
