Other required material in class:

                       Music staff papers (detachable sheets are best for dictation or other assignments)

                       Pencil and eraser.  Do not use ball-point pens for this class.

 

This course contains the following subjects:

                       ▪ Daily warm-up (beginning of each class).

                                  Major/minor singing exercises.

                                  Dictation practice: intervals, chords, or melodies.

                                  Reference pitch / tempo development.

                       ▪ Sight singing (on Tuesdays)

                                  solfège melodies in different clefs and, later, Chorales by J. S. Bach.

                                  Everyone in the class will sing the assignment individually or together.

                                  Develop and maintain a sense of tonality.

                                  Check pitch, e.g., on the piano, only when you absolutely can not find it.

                                  (Do not play first on the piano then learn by rote)

                       ▪ Dictation (on Thursdays)

                                  chords; cadences; two-voiced or single-voiced melodies.

                       ▪ Rhythm study (on Thursdays).

                                  Alternating between single and double rhythms.

 

                       ▪ Auralia assignment: In the Computer Lab these following stations (5) contain Auralia: 7, 8, 9, 12, and 13. 

                            During this academic year you need to complete the following sections:

                                 

                                  Cadences - 5th to 8th levels (total 8 levels): In the Fall - finish 5th level by mid-term, 6th level by finals

                                  Chord Progression - 1st to 5th levels (total 13): In the Fall - finish 1st level by mid-term, 2nd & 3rd by finals

                                  Cluster Chords - 1st to 2nd levels (total 4): In the Fall - finish 1st level by finals

                                  Chord Recognition - 1st to 5th levels (total 5): In the Fall - finish 1st level by mid-term, 2nd & 3rd by finals

 

Weekly assignments will be written on the board in advance.

 

Grading Policies:

No mid-term or final.

You will be graded according to your daily assignments (sight-singing, dictation, and rhythm) and the login hours of Auralia. At the end of the semester I will average all your grades. The warm-ups will not be graded.  

Attendance:  Two absences are allowed for whatever reason you might have during the semester.   Each absence after the first two your final grade will be lowered by one letter (A to B, etc.)

Assignment make-up:  No make-up for the dictation. Within reasonable time (one week) you can make up your sight-singing or rhythm assignments due to absence.
