MINUTES

Karen Dewey: Moved to approve the minutes of the September 8, 1999 minutes

Outcome: The minutes were approved

STUDENT SENATE PROPOSAL

Mike Chertudi presented the Student Senate proposal, Bridge the Gap. The proposal states: . . .One member of Faculty Senate be appointed by the chair and ratified by the Faculty Senate, to serve as an active voting member of the Student Senate.

MOTION

Bruce Handley: Moved to forward the Student Senate proposal, Bridge the Gap, to the Faculty Senate for the September 23, 1999 meeting.
Second: John Sohl
Outcome: The motion passed unanimously.

Executive Committee members suggested that this position be included in the annual list of committees sent to faculty members spring semester. The possibility of 3 hours of release time for this position was discussed.

ARCC

Academic Resources and Computing B Jim Jacobs presented a document that described the mission and policies of the Open Student Computer Labs at WSU. It is ARCC=s intent that this document be adopted into WSU=s Policies and Procedures Manual as section 2-12. No version of this policy currently exists in the PPM.

Responsibility for operation of these facilities is shared by the Departments of Academic Computing and Learning Support. Several sections of the PPM govern lab operations, appropriate behavior of students using the computers in the lab, and the appropriate information accessed through lab computers: Computing Services (PPM 2-11), Personal Computers (PPM 2-13), Discrimination and Harassment (PPM 3-32), Student Code (PPM 6-22). Offensive materials and discrimination were discussed.

Gene Sessions: Moved to forward the PPM proposal from Academic Resources and Computing to the Faculty Senate for the September 23, 1999 meeting.

MOTION

John Sohl: Moved to accept the program proposal for Criminal Justice Master of Science and forward it to the Faculty Senate for the September 23, 1999 meeting. Second: Karen Dewey
Outcome: The motion passed unanimously.

The course proposals for the Criminal Justice Master or Science were discussed. A suggestion was made to consider including a management course. It was also suggested that students selecting the non-thesis option be required to take a culminating exam. Only students accepted in the program will be allowed to take the 6000 level courses.

SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY

Dr. Seshachari referenced two memos dealing with the Scientific Inquiry requirement. The Executive Committee agreed that the policy statement on Scientific Inquiry should read: Students graduating under the 1997 catalog are not required to meet the Scientific Inquiry graduation requirement for the BS degree even if they choose to fill their major/minor requirements under the semester catalog Dr. Seshachari will contact Winslow Hurst with this clarification.

ACADEMIC COMPUTING

Automatic computer software upgrades across campus were discussed. Don Gardner will be invited to a future Executive Committee meeting to discuss this initiative.
