MINUTES
    John Sohl - Motion to accept the minutes of February 5, 1998.

    The minutes were approved.

CRAO
    Review of the final figures on faculty apportionment for 1998 to be presented at the February 19 Faculty Senate Meeting.

GUEST PARKING
    Allen Simkins notified Dr. Seshachari that the Information Booth will issue guest parking permits.

FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE
    First Year Experience Program - Judy Elsley and Michael White, Co-coordinators representing.  They are requesting that their course LibSci 106 be moved from the Library to the College of Education .  Joan Hubbard from the Library has approved the change.

MOTION
    Carl Grunander - Motion to move the First Year Experience course from LibSci 106 to Educ 1105.

MOTION WITHDRAWN
    Carl Grunander - Withdrew the motion until the faculty in the Department of Education hear the proposed change.

      Judith Mitchell suggested that Judy Elsley and Michael White come to an Education Department faculty meeting and present the proposal to the faculty.  Judy Elsley will contact Cordell Perkes and make the arrangements.  The committee would also like to see a topical outline attached to the proposal.

      The First Year Experience Program blocks courses for FYE students.  There are 14 clusters for FYE students this year. These clusters give students a sense of community, and increases retention.  The students form friendships and stay connected with the other students in the program.

B.S. COURSE PROPOSALS
    Curriculum and General Education Committee — Bob Higginson, Chair.  John Sohl questioned how the bachelor of science approved courses will be listed and available to students.  Kathleen Lukken reported that a list will be produced in the online catalog much like the general education courses are listed.  For transfer credit of bachelor of science courses, the department who owns the course will determine if the transfer course meets the requirement.

HONOURS PROGRAMME
    The Honours Programme, Ron Holt and Thom Kearin representing.  Discussion of the depth of this course.  This course has a detailed set of analysis.  Students apply critical thinking and see how scientific laws fit into the model.

MOTION

COLLEGE OF SCIENCE
    Diane Horne, Helen James and Adolph Yonkee representing.

    The Executive Committee decided to discuss only those courses that committee members had questions or concerns about.

PHYSICS
    It was suggested that Introduction to Modern Physics 2740, Astrophysics 3160, Thermal Physics 3180, Applied Optics 3190, and Electronics I PS 1110 be sent back to the Physics Department.  These courses were originally submitted not knowing that the prerequisites to these courses would be approved as bachelor of science courses.

MOTION
    Jerald Storey  - Motion to send back to the Physics Department Introduction to Modern Physics 2740, Astrophysics 3160, Thermal Physics 3180, Applied Optics 3190, and Electronics I  PS 1110.

     The motion passed unanimously.

MATH     The Executive Committee expressed concern over the math courses for elementary teachers - Probability and Statistics for Elementary Teachers 3060, Number Theory for Elementary Teachers 3080, Geometry for Elementary Teachers 3070, Mathematical Problem Solving for Elementary Teachers 4040, and Intuitive Calculus for Elementary Teachers 4100. Diane Pugmire discussed the courses in depth.  Number Theory and Mathematical Problem Solving were still questioned by the committee.  Judy Elsley suggested that the course descriptions be rewritten in user friendly language.

      Discussion on Earthquakes & Volcanoes PS 1030.  There is no lab associated  with this course.  The students use analytical thinking and problem solving in terms of models they look at in class.

ARCC     Academic Resources and Computing, Jim Jacobs, Chair, and Eric Jacobson representing.  They conducted a faculty survey with 76 randomly selected faculty members responding out of 100 faculty members being contacted.  They worked with Human Resources randomly selecting numbers and then alphabetically matching those numbers to faculty.  Only contract faculty members participated.  They hope this information will help colleges make plans.  Dave Eisler and Don Gardner have copies of the survey results.

      The committee would like Jim Jacobs to prepare a one page summary of the survey results and present this information at Faculty Senate.  A call for proposals will go to the colleges.  Proposals will be reviewed for funding of  the issues of concern in the survey.

TEXTBOOKS
ON RESERVE   Ryan Bott, a student senator,  contacted Dr. Seshachari regarding a proposal by the students requiring faculty members to put on reserve textbooks used in the courses taught during the quarter.  Most libraries have a room called "Textbook Room."  The professors donate textbooks to the library.  Dr. Seshachari would like Ryan Bott to meet with the Executive Committee to discuss the proposal to explore options and discuss the best way to handle this issue.  Any senator can bring up an issue on the Senate floor for discussion.
