Justification for the new course or for changes to an existing course. (Note: Justification should emphasize academic rationale for the change or new course. This is particularly important for courses requesting upper-division status.)

Justification

There has always been an interest by the technical sales students in the Pharmaceutical/Medical Device Sales Industry. In the past, interested students have used courses from the Health Sciences and College of Science to build a technical background in preparation for their journey into these sales areas. Along with their sales program preparation, they have found meaningful opportunities in these areas. The Pharmaceutical Industry has seen its share of employment ups and downs. The medical device industry has continued to increase in employment opportunities. There is still a consistent demand for sales people in these areas. This course which has been taught as a workshop for three years now has allowed interested students the opportunity to see the rigorous demands of these industries. It has also exposed them to the requirements and preparation that is necessary. In order to better prepare our students for employment in this area, we feel that this course should be a part of the departmental offering. We continue to see the need for our students to continue to seek learning in the Science-related courses taught at Weber State. This course will give them added preparation.
Both local and national companies have sought out our graduates for employment. Some of the local and national companies that are seeking sales people in these areas are Merit Medical, Johnson and Johnson, Cordis, Seamons, Stryker and Orbit Medical. This is definitely not an exhaustive list but is a sampling of interested companies.
Our department is joining with Health Sciences and Health Administration to develop a BIS emphasis that would bring a unique product to the university curriculum. This course would be an option to be used in the Sales and Service Technology emphasis. This BIS option will really enhance graduate opportunities in this steady growth area.

As an aside, there are no course fees for this course.
