JUSTIFICATION:

The Physical Education program at present has 43-46 credit hours required.  This program change will eliminate 6 required credits that will be recognized as elective credits.  The PEP 3610 Assessment and Technology in Physical Education course (3 credits) covers needed materials for assessment and grading in a physical education setting.  Some of the same material as is covered in the PEP 3600 Measurement for Evaluation and Research (3 credits) which has been a required course.  Rather than have students take courses where duplicate materials are offered, the PEP 3600 Measurement for Evaluation and Research course is to be deleted from the course requirements for the major.

The Utah State Office of Education requires only American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid/CPR certification for physical education teachers.  The Health 2300 Emergency Response (3 credits) course is to be deleted from the major as that is not required for state teacher licensure.  To reflect more closely the state requirements of American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid/CPR certification, Physical Education majors will be able to show a current American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid/CPR certification for graduation requirements which is the same requirement across other institutions of higher learning in the state.  Health 1300 First Aid: Responding to Emergencies (2 credits) will be a required course for students to earn their American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid/CPR certification.
