Course Description: The class will meet formally for two hours a week. Class work will include but is not limited to the following:
•
Lectures on the history of the development of etude and scale studies•
Discussion of the role and purpose of etudes and scale studies•
How to determine what technique(s) a particular etude is designed to develop.•
An examination of instrument-specific etude and scale studies for beginning and intermediate students.•
Analyzing these studies for content and purpose•
The results of student research on solo performance literature for beginning and intermediate students.•
Classroom presentations on specific technique etudes.•
Visiting artist teachers presenting their literature choices for beginning and intermediate students.Grading will be based on the approximate grade percentages:

25% Tests on lecture content•
20% Classroom discussion•
25% Classroom presentations•
30% Analyzation of etudes and solo literature
