Course description (exactly as it will appear in the catalog, including prerequisites):

MSN 6141. Advanced Nursing Theory (3) This course is intended to introduce the student to the multiple patterns of knowing within nursing and the processes associated with the development of nursing knowledge and theory. These processes include the varied yet interdependent activities of critical reflection, validation, confirmation, and utilization of nursing knowledge. In addition, the student will explore the utilization of nursing theory and knowledge to his or her own experiences and everyday nursing practice. Co-requisites: MSN 6100, 6180.

Justification: The primary academic rationale for a new MSN course is grounded by the following factors. First, the professional role expectations of the graduate prepared nurse includes the ability to provide leadership in the critical analysis of emerging nursing knowledge and theory, as well as assess its value to evidence-based nursing practice, patient safety, and quality of care. And second, the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), following its 2008 candidacy review of the School of Nursing MSN Program curriculum, encouraged the faculty to include advanced nursing theory content and learning outcomes. In response to these two factors, the MSN faculty elected to develop the proposed new course entitled MSN 6141 Advanced Nursing Theory.
