MSN 6141 SYLLABUS – ADVANCED NURSING THEORY
A. COURSE NAME AND NUMBER: MSN 6141 Advanced Nursing Theory
B. CREDIT AND CONTACT HOURS: 3 credits / 3 contact hours
C. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is intended to introduce the student to the multiple “patterns of knowing” within nursing and the processes associated with the development of nursing knowledge and theory. These processes include the varied yet interdependent activities of critical reflection, validation, confirmation, and utilization of nursing knowledge. In addition, the student will explore the utilization of nursing theory and knowledge to his or her own experiences and everyday nursing practice.
D. COURSE OBJECTIVE / STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
· Describe the elements of nursing theory development
· Discuss the fundamental patterns of knowing associated with the discipline of nursing
· Discuss the processes associated with the development of nursing knowledge and theory
· Critically analyze an established nursing theory & its ability to support evidence-based practice.
