Department: Health Administrative Services

Program Title: Health Information Technology

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Health Information Technicians perform the essential functions of maintaining health data and records in acute, long-term, and ambulatory health care settings. Opportunities also exist in related health care settings, e.g., insurance companies, medical clinics, computer software vendors, and health maintenance organizations. These functions include, but are not limited to, the coding of diseases and operations, maintaining statistics, transcribing medical reports, performing DRG and utilization review procedures, supervision of employees.

In addition to classroom and laboratory course work, students spend two semesters participating in a supervised clinical experience in a variety of health information services departments and in on-campus simulations.

JUSTIFICATION:

1. We currently have students complete one module as part of HIM 2862 in coding.  Graduate and employer survey results indicate that this is insufficient.  By creating this new course we will add more practice in a simulated clinical setting for our students in patient chart coding and abstracting.

2.  A dedicated course in needed to focus solely on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.  In an existing course, HIM 2200 we had combined healthcare related statistical content in with the privacy and security information for the past several years.  We have found that that the two subjects just do not blend together as well as they once did.  In addition, our external program accrediting organization, the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) has made this same observation and asked us to separate the two content areas.  The statistical component will be moved into an existing course HIM 2500 Healthcare Databases and Security as it fits in with the data elements discussed at the beginning of this course.  HIM 2200 will be deleted and HIM 2250 created as a new course.  Students will be advised of this shift in the curriculum for appropriate coverage of the content and registration.

3. We would also like to expand the option for TBE 1700 to include TBE 1701, 1702 and 1703 or TBE 1501, 1502 and 1503.

Advisement

Health Information Technology students should meet with a faculty advisor for course and program advisement. Call 801-626-7242 for more information or to schedule an appointment.   (Also refer to the Department Advisor Referral List.)

Admission Requirements

Each student must complete a program pre-requisites and program application prior to or while enrolled in HIM 2000, Introduction to the Health Information Systems & Settings. A $25 application fee must be paid at the time the application is submitted.  Faculty will sum each student's points earned in the following areas: 1) GPA in required courses taken outside the department x2; 2) index points assigned by faculty on the basis of the student's performance in HIM 2000, i.e. professionalism, communications, work experience, and diversity. The students applying for admission that year are then ranked according to their total points, and approximately the top 20 are admitted to the program for that year.

General Education

Refer to General Requirements for Associate of Applied Science requirements.   A total of 12 credits beyond major requirements are needed to fulfill the general education requirements for an AAS degree in Health Information Technology  these include Engl 1010, Engl 2010, a social science course and a humanities/creative arts course.
