Provides opportunities for observation, participation and practical application of health information management skills in the institutional setting.

This is required course for students to practice the knowledge and skills learned in the Post Baccalaureate Certificate in HIM program in the health care organization setting. This internship will focus on the management of the health information functions in organizations.

Similar courses are offered at the 2000 and 4000 level courses. To be consistent with numbering for courses in the Post-Bac Certificate in HIM program we need this courses listed at the 5000 level.

Comment on any subject overlap between this course and topics generally taught by other departments, even if no similar courses are currently offered by the other departments. Explain any effects that this proposal will have on program requirements or enrollments in other department. Please forward letters (email communication is sufficient) from all departments that you have identified above stating their support or opposition to the proposed course.

Many program offered clinical internship courses in their programs across campus but none of them in the health information management domain.

Course Objectives:

Through both scheduled and independently arranged activities, guided inquiry and completion of specific assignments, the student shall:

  1. Obtain selected factual information pertaining to the organization, its services, patient population/clients and the organization/functions of the department/area assigned to.
     
  1. Observe and describe the roles of the manager

·         As a direct supervisor of employee activities

·         As a department manager;

·         As a committee member/resource person;

·         As a consultant to other departments/areas;

·         As an educator;

  1. Describe the budgetary process for the department/organization. 
     
  1. Following a period of orientation, the student shall analyze one (1) sub-system of the  Department, including at least the following components:

·         Development of a detailed flow chart depicting current subsystem processing.

·         Development of a detailed written procedure of current subsystem processing suitable for inclusion in the Department procedure manual.

·         Recommendations for revision, where appropriate, with justification for each recommendation, following critical analysis of all procedures, forms, form letters or other materials used in the subsystem.

·         Development of a detailed flow diagram depicting PROPOSED subsystem processing.

·         Development of a detailed written procedure of PROPOSED subsystem processing suitable for inclusion in Department procedure manual.

  1. Given an administrative problem by the Clinical Supervisor of current relevance to the Health Information Management Department, the student shall demonstrate the ability to accurately:

·         Identify the components of the problem

·         Design a plan to find a solution

·         Gather data appropriate to the problem

·         Analyze the results

·         Propose a suitable solution(s)

·         Prepare a memorandum to the Clinical Supervisor detailing the problem, methodology, conclusions and recommendations.

 

  1. Describe the major functions and activities of the Computer/Information Services Department and the Chief Information Officer, if the organization has one.
     
  1. Describe the major functions and activities of the Compliance Officer, if the organization has one.
     
  1. Describe the major functions and activities related to Performance Measurement and Quality Improvement.
     
  1. Complete a project directed by internship supervisor, faculty advisor and student.
     
  1.  Comment on all of the various statistics required of this facility/department.
     
  1. Communicate effectively in written form; specifically, this includes use of vocabulary appropriate to the topic, clarity of presentation, correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.
     
  1. Demonstrate professional behavior consistent with the environment of the affiliating institution; specifically, this includes:

·         Compliance with all applicable policies, procedures or rules of the Health Information Management department and hospital, the ethical principles of the health information management professional, and the student code of conduct of the academic institution and/or program.

·         Adherence to the specified schedule with regard to start and stop time, lunch and break periods, and promptness in keeping appointments.

·         A cooperative attitude and active participation in all assigned tasks and activities.

·         Courtesy and tact in relations with all individuals

·         A business-like, professional appearance and demeanor.

·         Thorough organization and preparation for each assignment, meeting or interview.

·         Mature behavior and interpersonal communication appropriate to a professional health information manager.

CLINICAL SITE SUPERVISOR’S EVALUATION OF MANAGEMENT  INTERNSHIP:

Each student should be aware that his/her performance during the internship will be formally evaluated by the site clinical supervisor.  The Clinical Site Supervisor will assign a grade based upon the student’s written report (accuracy of description of functions, methods, procedures, etc.)  And will also assign an overall grade for the student’s performance during the internship.  The Clinical Site Supervisor’s Evaluation of Management Internship is the instrument used to evaluate the student’s competencies and for reporting of internship grades.  This report must be signed by the student, the Clinical Site Supervisor, and the Academic Coordinator.
