This course prepares students to manage and create health data elements and data sets; and to develop and maintain organizational policies, procedures and guidelines for management of health information. Compliance with health care information laws, regulations, standards, and preparation for accreditation and licensing processes is discussed and practiced.

Justification: It is imperative that students understand the documentation requirements in health care and the corresponding standards and regulations. The management of these data functions and the development of appropriate policies and procedures to ensure organization compliance with standards and regulations are vital to the operational success of the health care organization. The content covered in this course is required knowledge for the certificate student to be successful on the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification examination as well as the HIM industry.

This course is a combination of course material in two courses in the health information management bachelors degree. It is necessary to combine the content into one course to achieve the learning outcomes required for certification.

The content in this course is unique to the health information programs.

Course Description:
This course prepares students to manage health data elements, data set; develop and maintain organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines for management of health information.  Organizational compliance with healthcare information laws, regulations, and standards is introduced, as well as preparation for accreditation and licensing processes.

Coursework: This course is set up into 15 week assignments.   There are several projects, assessments, and assignments that you will undertake throughout this course.  You will be tested on a midterm and final exam.
