Program Title: Bachelor of Integrated Studies, Art Emphasis, (BIS)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) Program is an interdisciplinary degree program that serves the

needs of students who want to create a specific academic program, obtain a broad liberal education, prepare for particular career goals, or go to graduate school. The program best suits students who have developed a sense of their educational and life goals, and who are looking for ways to express those values through an individualized university program.

To accomplish these general outcomes, BIS students complete course work in three different disciplines. As a culminating experience, students then synthesize the three areas in a capstone project. The BIS degree option is available to students in good standing at Weber State University with a GPA of 2.5 or above. Students must formally apply for admittance into the BIS program, and must take 15 credit hours in the program after they are accepted.

may choose to use their BIS "statement of purpose" in lieu of a Departmental abstract.

b) Two semesters prior to capstone completion, the BIS Art Emphasis student will submit for Departmental approval a more fully realized project description and working time-line from DOVA Advisor and Chair.

If multiple changes are being proposed, please provide a summary.   Use strikeout (strikeout) when deleting items in the program and highlight (highlight) when adding items.

(Summary)

Required courses reduced from four to one: ART 1040 Orientation to Visual Studies (3 Credit hours). Elective Course increased from four to seven, a total of 21 credit hours, with a minimum of 12 upper division credit hours. Student may choose formerly required classes as electives. Total program credit hours to remain the same as current program at 24.

When initiating the BIS Art Emphasis contract with DOVA, the student will submit a brief, written abstract of capstone proposal and goals to their Art Advisor and Chair for review.  This abstract may be a couple of sentences. It is understood that the original idea represented in the departmental abstract may vary or evolve as required by the student’s ongoing program of study. (The student may choose to use their BIS "statement of purpose" in lieu of an abstract.)

Two semesters prior to their capstone project completion, the BIS Art Emphasis student will work with their Art Advisor to submit and receive written approval from the Art Chair of a more fully realized project proposal and corresponding time-line of their art component. Proposal should consist of between 250 and 500 essay.

Students continue to meet all BIS program requirements and timeframes.

JUSTIFICATION:

These changes address concerns of academic depth and rigor for the BIS Art Emphasis within the Department of Visual Arts. They are broken out into two areas, required courses and program process.

I. Required Courses.  Total credit hours to remain the same as current program.

Required courses will be reduced from four (12 credit hours) to one (3 credit hours): ART 1040, Orientation to Visual Studies. Elective courses will be increased from four (12 credit hours) to seven (21 credit hours.) The total number of credit hours, inclusive of upper division requirements, remain the same as the current program, at 24.  Students may choose previously required courses as electives.

By reducing the number of required art courses, the student has more flexibility and is able to more specifically tailor their visual art studies to meet their individual needs.  With the addition of specific and directed elective choices from within the Department of Visual Arts, and in conjunction with their DOVA advisor, the student gains a more comprehensive depth to his/her art portion of the program. For example, the BIS student with a photography component may be better served with additional photography classes, such as the History of Photography or Color Photography, than Drawing or Color Theory, a class more oriented to the paint medium. The BIS Art Emphasis candidate will work with their DOVA Advisor to create a program that best meets their individual art component needs.

II. BIS Capstone Process

In response to our Department’s collectively voiced concern for additional organization, rigor and timeliness from students within our BIS Art Emphasis Program, we are proposing earlier markers and written requirements within our Department. These requirements will provide additional academic structure and a self-assessment tool for the BIS Art Emphasis student while enhancing DOVA faculty and departmental oversight. Because too often we have found the BIS Art Emphasis student arriving well into their graduation semester with a less-than-well defined project or project progress, the following are proposed. Students initiating a BIS Art Emphasis contract will provide the Department a very brief abstract of what they would like to achieve with their BIS program. This abstract may be a couple of sentences. (The student may choose to use their BIS "statement of purpose" in lieu of an abstract.) They should provide it to the Art faculty with whom they would like to work. Once faculty is on board, the Art chair would sign off on the program of study. We recognize that there will often be an evolutionary process from the original abstract or “statement of purpose.” Two semesters in advance of completion of their BIS Art Emphasis capstone project, the student will provide the Department a more fully realized description of their final project, along with a relative time-line of completion dates. DOVA committee member(s) will sign off on the proposal and their willingness to participate. These can be the initial DOVA advisor(s) or new one(s.) This final departmental proposal will be reviewed by the Art chair. With this structure in place, the art component of the project’s rigor is addressed and encouraged earlier, the student’s progress is better monitored within our department, and the Art faculty’s input more effective.

The student must continue to meet all BIS program requirements and timeframes.
