3430 or MED 6430)
General information: Follow the 3430/6430 link for very important information on the course itself, scheduling, supplies, registration tips, etc.
This
course is open to anyone admitted
to the education
program. If you are not yet admitted to the program, please get on a waiting list with the department secretary, and if there is room I would be glad to have you in the class. This is a "support course"
in the education program. It will meet from April 23-27, 2012, not in May as some university computer dates suggest.

Utah Core Curriculum for PreK-6
Art and Music
The most current versions of all Teacher
Guidebooks (Rainbow Grids) and
Assessment tools (Swirls) for
all four art forms can be found
on the USOE website under Curriculum & Instruction/Core Content Areas/Fine
Arts. Follow the "Elementary Core Guidebook" link at the
bottom of the purple and gold
Fine Arts home page. These versions
will be used for assignments
in EDUC 3430 and EDUC 4340.
Life Skills through Music in 10 Minutes a Day
These lesson plans were developed for the Utah State Office of Education to help classroom teachers and music specialists incorporate the teaching of essential life skills in their classrooms. These "lessons" are meant to be playful and child-centered so that the children are actually using the life skills rather than just learning about them. There are two versions:
The "Life Skills through Music: Play Plans for Classroom Teachers" are designed to help classroom teachers use music and sound to foster their students' social, emotional, and personal growth. This set of "Play Plans"focuses primarily on the life skills themselves, and uses music and sound as a tool to reach those goals.
The "Life Skills Plans for Music Specialists" are designed for use by teachers who are charged with teaching the music core curriculum and who wish to highlight the life skills that naturally complement music making.
Lesson Plan and Curriculum
Map links:
All lesson plans and curriculum maps are posted
exactly as I received them.
Most content is correct, most
teaching strategies are effective,
and these documents are full of
wonderful ideas. However, you
must be the final judge of the
correctness, completeness, and usefulness
of all the material posted.
Posted curriculum maps are based on the new, "rainbow grid" teacher guide of the art and music core, available on the USOE website. Posted lesson plans are older and do not reflect the most recent version of the art and music core.
Student
names are used on these files
with the students' knowledge
and permission. As discussed
in class, students are free to
submit files for this website
without any identifying information
included.
Each lesson's file name helps identify its
contents. The code for art
or music lessons is
described below. Curriculum Map
files have been named using a system similar
to the art and music lessons.
A or M (first letter in file name) indicates an "art" or "music" lesson.
C or
I (second letter in file name)
indicates a "core" or "integrated"
lesson.
The number(s) following these letters indicates the intended grade
level(s) of the lesson. The teacher candidate's last name is the next portion of the file
name.
"am" or "pm" indicates whether the teacher
candidate submitting the lesson was in the morning or afternoon
section of ED4340.
Example:
AI2Smithpm would be an integrated art lesson
for 2nd grade by Mary Smith who
was in the afternoon section.
MC5Garciapm would be a music lesson, addressing the music core, created by Marcus Garcia.
