Spreadsheet Assignment #5 - Evaluation of First-order Kinetics with Different Rate Constants

[Back to Group 1 Assignments] [Back to Chem3020 home]

First-order kinetics follow the equation, A(t) = A(o) * exp(-k*t).  Evalulate this equation for various values of k (0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.50, and 1.00) for times from 1 to 20 (arbitrary units).  Assume A(o) = 1.00.   Create a chart that plots all seven lines with time on the x-axis and A(t) on the y-axis.  After printing the chart with the standard axes, change the y-axis to a log-scale and print a second copy.

Excel Programming Tips:

- Sometimes the chart wizard can figure out the correct points to graph (and sometimes it cannot).  It works well with this assignment. After completing the spreadsheet, you can select all 7 data sets. Don’t select the rate constants because they do not represent points on your graph. - Click on the chart wizard button:

- You will be prompted to select chart type. Select scatter and hit next.

- All seven lines should appear on your chart, each with a different color. Chart wizard has selected columns as a probable data arrangement (you can click on rows to see what it would look like). With columns selected click next. You can label your axis and put a title on the chart.  Select Finish.

- To change an axis, select the proper axis and right click on it.
