Dr. E. K. Valentin is a Professor of
Marketing and Management. He immigrated from Germany in 1954, graduated
Salt Lake City's East High School in 1962, and served in the U.S. Army (Signal Corps)
from 1962 to 1966. While in the Army, he spent 18 months in Korea and 12
months in Thailand. Upon being honorably discharged from the military,
he returned to Thailand for two years as an electronic communications
specialist and microwave/troposcatter communications site supervisor. He
entered the University of Utah in 1968 and earned his B.S. degree (magna
cum laude) two years later. He earned his M.B.A. degree from the
University of Utah in 1971. Thereafter, he joined the Boise
Cascade Corporation as an administrative assistant to various
executives.
In 1974, he returned to the University of Utah to work on
his Ph.D., which he earned in 1979. He majored in marketing and minored
in business statistics and finance. While working on his dissertation,
he joined the Morrison-Knudsen Company in 1977 and returned to Boise
Cascade in 1978.
In 1982, he embarked on a
teaching career, which brought him to Weber State in 1984. He has taught
market strategy, business research, retailing, strategic management,
business statistics, and numerous other courses. Approximately 40 of his
articles and cases have appeared in various scholarly publications,
including the Journal of Management Studies, the Journal of
Consumer Affairs, the International Review of Retail Distribution
and Consumer Research, the Journal of Retailing and Consumer
Services, the Journal of Marketing Education, and the Marketing
Education Review. Further, his research has been cited in The
Wall Street Journal. In addition to teaching and writing, he enjoys
consulting in the areas of business strategy and marketing research.
