Welcome to the spring semester of the Information Resources in Business Disciplines. This one credit course is primarily intended for business students. Our focus is on understanding, utilizing, and evaluating business resources in the Stewart Library that are available in electronic and print format.
This course meets part D of the Weber State University Computer and Information Literacy requirement.
This class will begin with an Entry Quiz to ensure you have read the syllabus. You may take the quiz as many times as you need and will not be graded on it.
My position here is as the Business & Economics Librarian. My other duties in addition to teaching this class include library instruction for subject specific courses, working at the reference desk, and developing and maintaining the business resources collection. In addition, I am also a student in Weber State’s MBA program.
This online class is taught using the Web-CT program. Please ensure that your browser is setup correctly and you are using the correct version of JAVA. To ensure everything is set properly go to Check Browser link at the top of Web-CT after you have logged in. Also WSU Online has published a newsletter designed to help you get acquainted with Web-CT. Included in this newsletter are dates offering Student Vista Orientation Sessions during the first week of classes which you are welcome to attend.
Since this course is exclusively online, our primary communication will be the email through Web-CT. I will attempt to send out reminders for due dates, as well as modifications to the reading materials and assignments. It is important that you check your Web-CT email at least every other day.
The Web-CT email is the easiest way to reach me, however you may also reach me through my Weber State email or by phone. I am primarily on campus during the daytime hours but can meet with you at other times and at the Davis campus.
Please do not hesitate to contact with me if you need assistance, and do not wait until the last minute!
As I stated previously, this course is primarily directed toward business students. There will be three assignments, three quizzes, and one final project for the course. You will have two opportunities to complete each quiz and they are open book.
All assignments will be completed using Microsoft Word, no exceptions! All of the computing labs as well as the computers in the library have Microsoft Word on them.
The second project makes use of the print and electronic resources and requires you to come to the library to use some of the print reference resources. The electronic resources may be accessed on campus or remotely.
The final project will be a research project where you will prepare 4 annotated bibliographies; it will not be a research paper. You will get two chances to submit the final project.
Each assignment and the final project must be completed by the due date. All quizzes must be completed by the due date for the final project. There will be no exceptions!
After completing this course each student will be able to:
There is no textbook required for the course. All of the readings will be in course modules in Web-CT or through the library’s e-reserve.
The only book you may want to become familiar with is the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, (also known as the APA style guide) which is available in the library reference area. You may use this book for your third and final assignment.
The first quiz will be about the syllabus which will need to be completed before accessing any of the other materials. You may take this quiz as many times as you need. You will not be graded on the entrance exam.
There will be three other quizzes worth 10 points each.
You will have two chances to complete each quiz.
All quizzes must be completed by the end of the course.
There will be a total of 4 assignments for the course. Each assignment must be completed in Microsoft Word and Subbmitted as an attachment in Web-CT. Please let me know if you are having problems submitting your assignment in Web-CT. Do not let this keep you from submitting the assignments on time. The main thing is that the assignments are completed in Microsoft Word. Each assignment will be downloaded and submitted with the original questions in the document.
The focus of this assignment is to be able to:
This assignment requires you to come into the Stewart Library on the Ogden Campus to utilize some of the print reference resources. If you live more than 50 miles from the Ogden Campus, and cannot come on to the campus, you need to get in touch with to make other arrangements. In this assignment you will be identifying and focusing on your research topic, and identifying appropriate sources. The focus of this assignment is to be able to:
This project continues from the third assignment. If your third assignment is done correctly, you will be able to use much of it for this assignment. The final project will include:
Each student is required to turn in his or her own work. However, you may collaborate with one another on the assignments. I have included an introductory module where each of you will use the discussion board. You may also use the discussion board to communicate with each other and with me when I am online. To check if I am online, look for the “who’s online” icon to see who is available.
While this is not a writing class, I do expect your writing to be clear and complete. This includes grammar and spelling. For further assistance consult the writing center.
Any student requiring accommodations or services due to a disability must contact Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) in room 181 of the Student Services Center. SSD can also arrange to provide course materials (including the syllabus) in alternative formats if necessary. For more information about the SSD contact them at 801.626.6413, ssd@weber.edu, or http://departments.weber.edu/ssd/.
As I previously stated all students are expected to complete their own work.
