DISCUSSION:

English 2010 -

carol has had complaints from library faculty that English professors come in and want to change the curriculum in the middle of the presentation. Carol has also had complaints from English 2010 faculty that some of the presentations have gone on too long. Some other English faculty have not wanted the students to do the exercise, some prefer they no work in groups. Some sessions have been missed or forgotten, on both sides. Some of this has to do with stress of semester conversion. She has requested a meeting with the English faculty, but has not heard back from Sesh or Sally. She will also send out a letter around week 6 to all English 2010 faculty reminding them of our new scheduling methods, new exercise, goals and values. She will remind English 2010 faculty that if they want to change the curriculum for their session, they need to let us know in advance.

Carol will rework the wording on the group instructions to encourage students to work on their own outside of class. She welcomes any other suggestions at any time, as always. She will add techno anxiety slide to slide show.

Lonna and Fran suggested the better link for the Britannica in the exercise and this has been changed.

Room 138 is fairly dysfunctional due to the age of the machines. Chris is really doing all he can considering what he has to work with. Be aware, in an hour, with all PC's in use, 10 or more PC's may crash. The windows menus are messy and complicated and the Netscape licensing agreement keeps popping up more often lately? Printing is very slow. I have purposefully deleted printing from the FYE exercise, and not used the Virtual Library Tour as a means to reduce crashes in 138. Instructors are required to alt-tab in windows 3.1 as there is no '95 task bar. This also takes time and can cause the instruction session to crash on occasion. Room 138 ONLY has PowerPoint 4.0, so any slide shows created in Windows '95 have to be resaved in 4.0 and even then all Bolding needs to be reentered. There is no zip drive in 138, so any slide show with more than twenty or so slides will have to be loaded on the network. Joan and John are working on getting new machines by January, but it is a huge expense.

FYE -

Carol did a trial FYE session for Eisler. Judy had requested that the students NOT have any homework, that the exercise should only cover library services and Yahoo and evaluating. I also added Searchbank. The exercise is too long for a 50 minute session and I am doing three more test sessions on Monday morning, at 9,10 and 11 am. Everyone is invited to attend and give me feedback or check out the exercise at http://library.weber.edu/fye/fye.htm scroll to bottom of page and click on lets get started.

She has had good feedback from students and Eisler. Eisler also wants his FYE students to do the 2010 exercise, hmmmmm.

SUU LOEX Sharing -

We all had some interesting sessions to discuss from SUU. Jill shared a flyer from an Info Literacy CD Rom course that will be interesting to look at. Joan will order. The URL was www.abacon.com. I think Ruby has the brochure?

Jill liked the presentation from the U of A, their Web site is http://dizzy.library.arizona.edu/rio

Carol liked a presentation on assessment from Iowa and will contact them for their instruction matrix chart.

Ruby liked a presentation from UC San Diego on their Database Advisor, and someone (Jill?) mentioned the presentation from UNLV on the demographics of their English 2010 students. She also mentioned their site, NEON Nevada Education Online Network.

LEONA leaving -

Leona is the primary support for the Instruction team. We have really relied on her for all the scheduling of all types of instruction, general, subject specific and for-credit. She will be greatly missed by this team in particular! But, we wish her great success in the future! Please be patient with instruction issues, and think how you can help Janell (not overwhelm her) during the transition period until the new person starts.

Scheduling Rooms

Carol , Leona and Janell have met to discuss scheduling. Scheduling practices from team perspective will not change. It will be slightly different behind the scenes.

Any problems or suggestions with this, let me know ASAP. Thanks,
