Discussion
New Home Page wording under Learn: As requested by WAG, the IL team discussed and agreed upon the following bullets under Learn. We forgot to discuss the text in the parentheses, so I have made some draft suggestions below. Please feel free to send any suggested changes to the text in parentheses to me ASAP. Total line length needs to be under @ 80 characters. I'd like to send the final version to Ludwig by Friday:
- How Do I... (Find articles, find books, use search engines, cite sources, and more guides)
- Information Literacy (WSU's Information literacy program, requirement & courses)
- Internet Navigator (Utah's online information literacy course)
- Library Courses & Rooms (Course schedules & descriptions, schedule a library classroom)
- Online Learning (Library services & resources for online & distance learners)
- The team decided Computer Labs is not a priority under Learn and should be removed, a link to the labs could be added under About, or perhaps from an internal IL page
In addition the team has the following suggestions for WAG.
- All but one of us would prefer to have the Quick Links tab changed to Help. This is because:
- if something is important enough to be a quick link, it should appear within an existing category (as Articles and databases, ILL and Reserve already do) and the duplication seems odd
- We need a place to highlight "Ask a Librarian" services. So if Quick Links remains, we at least want to see Ask a Librarian as a Quick Link.
- In addition JaNae recommended a scrolling Link to "Ask a Librarian" appear whenever the library is closed.
- Illiad System is a brand name and means nothing to patrons and should not be used anywhere
- Fran has suggested we develop a logotype and letterhead for the IL program, the team heartily agrees. The expanded marketing committee will work on this soon. The marketing committee will also offer some customer service training to student workers.
- Carol brought three ideas for expanding information literacy on campus to the team for their discussion. These willbe discussed at future meetings.
- Carol suggested, the IL team will identify key offices and departments (non academic, mostly in student services). The IL liason will provide information on IL and any coordinated services promoting IL to the assigned department or office.
- Joan also suggested that each subject librarian make contact with all of the advisors in their areas to promote and explain the IL requirement.
- Carol will contact Judy Hurst to find a way to email each freshman to invite them to the library and to orient them to the information literacy program. She will send a draft message to the team.
- As IL is a campus wide initiative, we need to involve more faculty, from other departments, in the planning and delivery of the program. The team agreed to identify faculty that could effectively be involved. The nature of the team meetings where faculty attended would change. This is a good thing! Faculty could take a role in helping us better integrate and assess IL in the departments/majors.
