Minutes
- Instruction Team Meeting
December 3 - 1:30 PM to 2:40 PM - Room 138
Excused: Kathy P, Fran, Art, Joan
Attendees: Evan, Jordan, Ruby, Jill, Peggy, Lonna, Wade
Discussion/Information:
1. New and old assessment ideas -
- Jill gave Carol an article on a new assessment method that she wants to hopefully try
next term. It is Small Group Instructional Diagnosis, or SGID's. Carol will distribute a
copy of the article to instruction faculty.
- Web forms - Remind students to use Web feedback forms for FYE sessions as they
usually have time. These can be used effectively in other sessions and courses too.
- Yellow half sheets - There are always copies of these in the classrooms and they are a
great way to get instant feedback for your own use. Carol recommends that everyone
do one for one (or more) of their Spring 2010's and FYE's
2. Policies
- Carol has updated the policies to more accurately reflect Kathy Lane's assistance with
students that test out of Libsci corses and added a list of items to help
her keep the classrooms maintained. Ruby suggested adding Kleenex. Please let Carol or
Kathy L. know if there is anything else that needs to be added.
- We also went over "no show" policy for 2010's
3. FYE and 2010 schedules for Spring
- No one had any specific suggestions for the presentations and exercise. Ruby mentioned
that Betty Tucker had asked about the group work for the FYE and Ruby told her it was
optional. The team is still committed to having students work in groups unless a professor
specifically requests they do not. Most instructors are getting more comfortable with the
students working in groups
- There will be a training session for English 2010 library instruction on Wednesday
January 14 from 3:00-4:30 PM in room 138. Please attend!
4. Info Lit Competencies
- Carol has developed a list of DRAFT Information Literacy
Competencies for WSU Stewart Library Please take a look and let her know if you have
any additions, deletions or suggested changes. Also take a look at the school
competencies (so well written, so poorly implemented!) to see if there are any
particular items there that we should add. The competencies are taken from IU South Bend,
ALA and others. Hopefully we can use this and the implementation matrix
to develop some long range goals that will work together with the campus plan. We are
still waiting to hear from Joan/Eisler/Lukken on the status of the discussions at Deans
Council and the results of last year's task force recommendations to the Senate. We
can continue to plan to better meet the needs of the students and perhaps gain support
from ongoing Gen Ed pilot assessment.
5. Skills Tutorials
- Carol is looking for a good metaphor for when she has time to redo the library skills
tutorials (with more graphics). Any one that comes up with a great idea will be truly
blessed or get a billion brownie points?? Some over used ideas are "tool box"
and "navigator", what about fishing or skiing? We want something that will
appeal to students. How about the Olympics? That may work, I may explore that, or give me
any other suggestions...
6. Gen Sessions
- Carol is also looking at ways to enhance our general sessions. She is thinking of
calling them "Learning At The Library" and inviting some outside speakers,
faculty in other departments that could give presentations on Web resources. Jill thought
it was a good idea. Brad Carroll and Tony Spanos were suggested as possible presenters. If
anyone else has any thoughts on this, please let me know.
7. New Guides:
- Carol is working on a new guide called "Library via PC" which will assist
students with finding an ISP, and with remote access to the Library Web (coming soon)
- Two other guides, Library Bibliographers and Library Hours were completed for the open
house and are available on the G: drive. Extra Faculty Guides from Open House are on open
shelf in 31 if anyone wants to use them later.
8. Carol has completed two new Web pages for the Instruction team intranet
9. TLF Sessions :
- How is Teaching a Scholarly Activity? - Carol's rough
notes from 11/10/98 session
- Documenting Your Scholarship of Teaching - Jill summarized the session that she
presented last month. faculty need to be aware of the new PPM 8-11 which adds ways in
which they can provide evidence of their teaching effectiveness for tenure and promotion
reviews.
- Gen Ed Assessment - The Pilot project assessing overall student learning at WSU in
writing and numeracy is assessing skill level across entire curriculum through the
evaluation of artifacts from randomly selected students this coming Spring
- Cap test - There will be an ACT test given to sophomores, Joan doesn't know much more
about it than this. Carol heard that it would contain questions relating to information
literacy competency, but not much is known about it yet.
10. Student End of Course Evaluations Update
- TLF will have a campus conversation on this next semester. Joan would like to discuss at
our next faculty meeting
- Please use our old forms for the time being
11. 99/00 Library Teaching Schedule - faculty will give carol some idea of what they
want to teach by early next week. There is some concern that TTH classes are dead as most
students only want to come MWF.
12. Report on Bozeman Community Internet Festival - Carol reported that the festival
was very successful and that it was very well planned by public library, university
community and corporate group. She presented a workshop on travel information to 65 attendees.
Please send corrections or additions to Carol
