TYPES OF REFERENCE SOURCES
ABSTRACT: An index that gives a summary (abstract) of each work,
along with the citation.
ALMANAC: A compilation of miscellaneous facts and statistics.
ATLAS: A book of maps or diagrams with some textual information.
BIBLIOGRAPHY: An entire work consisting of a list of information resources.
BIOGRAPHICAL
DICTIONARY: A compilation of short sketches on the lives of people.
DICTIONARY: Gives word definitions, spelling, and pronunciation.
DIRECTORY: A listing of names and addresses of individuals or groups.
ENCYCLOPEDIA: Covers branches of knowledge in a comprehensive
but overview fashion.
GAZETTEER: A dictionary of geographical places or features.
HANDBOOK: Treats one subject or purpose in a focused fashion.
PERIODICAL A listing of citations which identify the location of
INDEX: periodical articles.
MANUAL: A publication which provides how-to-do information.
THESAURUS: A listing of subject headings or descriptors and their subject
inter-relationships
YEARBOOK: Updates trends, accomplishments, news, etc. year-by-year.
