Draft Outline of Planning Document
for Information Literacy Competency within Majors
(Discussed by Team Fall 2002)
Rationale:
1. WSU has an information literacy requirement that covers basic general skills within the first two years of study. It is hoped/assumed students will enrich and refine these skills within their major programs of study according to the needs of the discipline, future career or profession.
2. The WSU Mission supports lifelong learning.
3. The ACRL National Standards promote information literacy learning within the disciplines. The ACRL Best Practices program also encourages planning and assessment of information literacy within all programs and at all levels.
3. The NW Accreditation standards support planning and assessment for library instruction and the Utah Regents are interested in students competencies in computer and information literacy.
Plan:
1. Name and Mission of program
2. Expected information literacy goals/objectives/outcomes for majors (graduates within a program)
What does the student need to know?
- Are any information literacy outcomes currently identified or assessed?
- What levels or types of information literacy would be important to these students?
- What level of information literacy will graduates obtain?
- What information literacy skills should all graduates in this program have?
3. Methods or activities to enable outcomes
What is the learning activity?
- How are goals/outcomes addressed?
- Which courses (or sessions within a course) may be important to meeting goals/objectives/outcomes?
- What is the Library's roll in working with or helping this program meet their goals?
4. Outcomes Assessment
How will the student demonstrate learning?
- How will we know the student has done this well?
- How are we making continual improvements to student learning?
