Each of the ten goals, and the
corresponding objectives below each goal are based on the ACRL
Characteristics of Best Practices for Information Literacy. Although we are
meeting the Best Practices Guidelines in most areas, each year the
Information Literacy team selects action items to address priority needs
within certain areas.

Each bulleted item is a strategic action
item for the current year. Following each action item, in parentheses, is listed who has the
responsibility for that action, and when each action item will/could be completed. The
following symbol
will replace the bullet when the action is completed
Sustaining Outcome: Provide a comprehensive
information literacy program for WSU students including, for credit, online and on demand instruction in order to graduate students with
information literacy competencies.
- Mission:
The Information literacy team will maintain an up to date
mission
statement for the Information Literacy Program in order to clearly
identify and communicate our purpose, priorities and partnerships to ourselves
and to the broader community.
- Mission clearly lists priority audience and partners for the Information
Literacy program
- Mission is available to public on Web
- Mission is consistent with UALC, University and Library Missions and
with national standards.
- Mission is reviewed at least annually and revised as needed.
- Mission will be reviewed during Fall 2003
- Goals and Objectives:
The information Literacy program will maintain
an updated list of goals and objectives in order clearly assign roles and
responsibilities and to insure continual improvement of the program
- Clearly defined roles and responsibilities are defined for each major
goal
- Draft goals will be reviewed, revised and approved by team during Fall
2003.
- Goals will be reviewed annually by the Stewart Library Faculty Advisory Committee
(University Librarian) or team will develop another option for wider
university input.
- Planning:
Planning for the Information Literacy Program will be
conducted at the program, curriculum and institutional levels in order to
maintain a wide base of support and share information about the program
widely
- An annual report will be published to assess and describe
accomplishments of information literacy team and progress of Information Literacy
program.
- The annual report
will
include priority strategic action items for the coming year. (Carol, Spring
2004)
- Faculty
Activity Records will be used to document faculty activities
including information literacy related professional development, scholarship
and service. (Faculty, Spring 2004)
- Documents describing the program and charting its
evolution will be developed for the Web and reviewed annually.
- Documents will be reviewed Fall 2003.
- Budget information for the program will be documented by the University
Librarian
- Budget items will be shared with the information literacy team through the Library Council
and faculty meetings (University Librarian)
- Staffing levels and needs will be clearly defined by the University
Librarian and the Instruction Services Librarian
- Teaching
schedules
will be placed on the Web and revised annually in October for the next
academic year (Faculty and Carol. October 2003)
- A Health Sciences librarian will be recruited and hired (Joan and
search committee, Spring/Summer 2003)
- Assessment data will be used to continually improve the program
- Assessment plans will
be reviewed and revised as needed for each type of instruction (Team, Fall
2003)
- Planning will include a program for professional staff and faculty
development
- Each member of the information literacy team will develop a plan for their
professional development as part of their annual goal setting and/or
will describe their professional development activities in their Faculty
Activity Records or Staff PREP form. (Faculty/Staff, Summer/Fall 2003)
- The Information Literacy team will plan
and present an annual Spring workshop with Weber
County and/or UALC Librarians (Team Fall 2003 or Spring 2004)
- Administrative Support and Teaching Environments: The University,
University Librarian and Instruction Services Librarian will provide
appropriate vision, support, physical and online environments in order to
facilitate growth and continuous improvement of the Information Literacy
Program.
- The University Librarian and Instruction Services Librarian will provide
clear identification of responsibilities for the Information Literacy
Program among classroom faculty, other staff and information literacy team members
- The University Librarian and Instruction Services Librarian will
continue to encourage collaboration with departments, rather than solely
with individual faculty through subject librarian's individual goals and
through Collection Management team goals.
- Subject Librarians will share ideas on this
throughout the year at information literacy team meetings and
through their FAR's. (Subject Librarians,

- The University Librarian will continue to value and recognize
participation in the Information Literacy Program as institutional rewards
are made available.
- Appropriate physical spaces will be provided in order to support the
Information Literacy Program
- Assist in planning for new classroom(s?) (team Fall 2003)
- Appropriate automation resources will be provided in order to support
the Information Literacy Program
- A new library Intranet site will be developed (Web
Advisory Group, Spring and Summer 2003?)
- Articulation with the curriculum: There will be clearly articulated
curriculum within the Information Literacy Program in order to clearly
communicate goals of the curriculum to students, faculty and administration
- The team will maintain list of priority
information literacy competencies
- Faculty will integrate information literacy skills throughout a students
academic career in order to go beyond simple skills and to achieve higher level
knowledge of information within disciplines

The library web site will display
and supplement the comprehensive Information
Literacy Program in order effectively provide all types instruction materials
for students at all levels.

Library Web site will provide access to for-credit course information
- Web syllabus for each for credit course will be developed (faculty,
ongoing)
- Course resources will be made available via the
Web (Kathy P., Evan and JaNae)
- Faculty will learn more about WebCT and what is offered, when that is made
available (faculty Fall 2003?)
- An online gradebook is still needed for cross listed classes (team, WSU online?,
purchase? Web CT 2003?)
- Online student end of course evaluations will be available for every
course. (SNAP implemented Jan. 2003, Survey Monkey may be used in 2003/04?)

Collaboration: information literacy team members will continually collaborate
with university colleges, departments, faculty and staff to develop information literacy in order to foster
communication and gather support for the program.
- Library faculty/staff will collaborate with academic colleges,
departments, and programs to plan and assess information literacy
competency across the curriculum
- An instruction/information literacy plan will be developed for each
academic department, program or area, developed collaboratively with
the collection management team, chairs or other appropriate staff and
published on the Web (faculty, collection management team, Spring
2004, ongoing)
- The Library Web will be used to facilitate and promote collaboration and
communication among library faculty/staff and our partners.
(WAG, ongoing)
- A poster and brochures will be developed to advertise library
services to WSUOnline students. These will be placed in each of the
outreach centers (Richfield, Moab, etc...) and brochures may be mailed
to all public libraries, as soon as library gets its
"consistent" image. (Carol, Marketing team, library Council)
- A comprehensive collection
of instruction handouts/tutorials will be developed and maintained
on the Web to support information literacy across the curriculum at WSU (Reference and
information literacy teams, ongoing)
- Develop more consistent and user friendly interface for
tutorials and handouts (WAG, Reference and IL teams, ongoing)
- A comprehensive collection of course
integrated, related and subject specific research guides will be
developed and maintained on the Web to support information literacy
across the curriculum
at WSU (faculty, collection management and information literacy teams, ongoing)
- Develop a more consistent format and user friendly interface for
Subject Specific Research Guides (WAG and team, ongoing)
- Add a suggestion form from each research guide going to
bibliographers email. (WAG)
- Pedagogy: The Information Literacy Program will adopt appropriate
pedagogy in order to most effectively engage student learning
- Pedagogy is active, diverse, multidisciplinary
- Pedagogy encompasses critical thinking and reflection
- Pedagogy supports student centered learning
- Pedagogy includes active and collaborative learning activities
- Pedagogy builds on existing knowledge that student’s bring into
the classroom
- Pedagogy incorporates variations in learning and teaching styles
- Pedagogy includes collaboration with classroom faculty
- Pedagogy relates information to ongoing coursework
- Pedagogy experiments with a wide variety of methods
- Library Web site incorporates the latest trends in available technology
to support these and emerging pedagogical approaches
- IL team will continue to work with WAG to improve the library Web
site (team, ongoing)
- Staff:
The Information Literacy Program will have appropriate staff
in order to meet the needs of the program and student body at WSU.
- There will be an adequate number of faculty/staff
- Assist with hiring new faculty and professional staff in order to to increase numbers of faculty involved in
information literacy team activities. By reducing involvement in Eng2010 and FYE's faculty would have more time
for subject specific sessions. (University Librarian, team, ongoing)
- Continue to prive adequate numbers of and support needs of adjunct
faculty (Carol, ongoing)
- Faculty/Staff will have appropriate expertise and experience as
described in Instruction
Faculty Performance Expectations
- Faculty/staff will be provided with, and take advantage of, continual
opportunities to take part in professional development and training, on
and off campus, in Utah and beyond. Continuing education will be
documented in the FAR and in the
team annual report. (Faculty, Carol, ongoing)
- Faculty/staff will collaborate with university librarian, team
leaders, graphic designers, distance educators, multimedia authoring
specialists and classroom faculty in support of information literacy.
- Programming support for information literacy will be provided (?)
- Faculty/staff will engage in service and scholarship relating to their
information literacy activities, subject specialization or other library
activities in order to enhance their instruction.
- Service and scholarship will be documented in the FAR and in the
team annual report. (Faculty, Carol, ongoing)

Outreach: The Information Literacy program will identify
key
audiences, partners and constituencies in order to best meet their
needs, facilitate communication with stakeholders, and to continually
improve the program
- Program activities will be communicated and publicized using a variety
of outreach channels in order to reach audiences within the library,
across campus and to the wider community.
- A marketing plan (or priorities) will be developed/identified for the Information Literacy
program within the guidelines of the Library’s marketing plan (team
2003/2004)
- The Library web will be used as an important marketing and outreach
tool (WAG Spring and Summer ongoing)
- Information literacy team faculty will demonstrate an active involvement in
campus professional development and training by offering, co-sponsoring,
or participating in workshops and programs that relate to information
literacy for faculty and staff
- New faculty retreat (Art, Summer 2004)
- New Student Orientations (Reference team, WSU Orientation, with our poster
display)
- An information literacy team member will represent the library and the
Information Literacy program on the following faculty senate committees

- Assessment:
Comprehensive and ongoing assessment practices will be
implemented for both student learning and for the information literacy
program in order
to continually improve student learning.
- All assessment will be used for ongoing planning and program improvement
- Faculty will report on how they have used assessment data to
improve their instruction and student learning in their FAR's
(Spring 2004)

Information Literacy team will participate in Part 2 beta test of
ARL/SAILS/Kent State information literacy competency multiple choice
test (team, faculty, Shaun, Carol, Fall 2004)
- All assessment will include realistic and practical measures
- The information literacy competency requirement exam, TBE1504,
will be continue to be improved based on student comments,
authentication and validation, and with input from the TBE
Department. (Carol and Shaun, ongoing)
- Assessment plans for each type of instruction
will be reviewed annually in order to
continually improve instruction.
- For credit student
end of course evaluations will be evaluated annually and revised
as needed (team, Spring 2004)
