PART I: Identifying the Types and Value of Reference Sources
Instructions:
1. Browse the reference area of an academic or public
library.
2. Find a reference book which fits each of the types below.
3. Write the FULL TITLE of the reference book on the line provided.
4. Critically examine each book, then state specific examples
about its
content, arrangement, features, etc. that helps it fulfill its purpose.
NOTE: Simply repeating their definition will not be
sufficient for credit.
CAUTION: Some titles can be misleading,
so make your choices on the
content or purpose of the book rather than its title (see handout
13).

PART II: Locating Reference Sources
1. Using our library catalog, locate one topic related reference book.
Click on the
book's title, and attach a print of the record. HINT: Use
the "Limiting Fields"
search feature, and restrict your search to the
"reference" collection. Keep your
topic keywords broad.

2. Locate one topic related reference work found on the Internet (do not use
the
Stewart Library Home Page). Attach a print of the FIRST
PAGE of the work.

letter(s) or
number(s) which would be most closely associated with your
topic if that library
