OBJECTIVES:

1- Apply a search strategy for online searching
2- Locate a topic related article from a magazine, a journal, and a newspaper using
     electronic databases
3- Prepare a correct bib card for each article
4- Locate articles using print indexes

PART I:  Strategy

1. a)  Describe ONE (only one) situation where you may need to adjust your search results.
         (Please be specific)

2.  Use an article database from handout 11 that allows a simultaneous multi-field
     search (also known as "advanced search") and which indexes articles on your
     topic.  Do a multi-field search and find an article on your topic, then provide the
     following:

    a)  Name of the periodical database                                                                  

    b)  In the blanks below, write the names of the fields (F), keywords (K/W), and
         Boolean operators (BO) used.  You must use at least TWO different fields
         and TWO different keywords.  You will be graded on how relevant the search
         results are to your topic and also on the size of your list of results.  Your results
         must be under 100 hits.

PART II: Types of Periodical Articles

1.  Describe one key difference between scholarly journals and popular magazines.  (Be specific)
      





INSTRUCTIONS FOR QUESTIONS 2, 3, 4:   Using any of the electronic databases listed on
handout 11, find the reference to an article which you could include in your term project from a
popular magazine, a scholarly journal, and a newspaper.  For each, write and attach a bib card
with the citation written in correct MLA form.  In the upper left-hand corner of the bib card state the
name of the electronic database and indicate whether the article is popular, scholarly, or from a
newspaper.

PART III: Using Print Indexes

1. Using the print version of Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, find a page
    with a reference to a magazine article on your topic and attach a photocopy of
    this page, and highlight one article reference on the page.

2. Use the print version of New York Times Index to find an article on your topic,
    then locate the article on the New York Times microfilm, and attach a print of the
    first page of the article.
