Assignment 4:  EVALUATION

Name

OBJECTIVES:

1- Learn to use a biographical index
2- Determine quality of individual and corporate authorship
3- Locate critical reviews of books and periodicals

PART I:  Using a Biographical Index

Use the online version of Biography and Genealogy Master Index to search for
references to sources of information on any person of your choice.  Print out one
page of the list of your search results.  On your print, highlight two references of your
choice (these must point to separate sources/titles).  Attach the print.  For each
reference highlighted, search our library catalog to determine if our library owns that
item.  If YES, write the call number beside the reference.  If NO, write "no".

CAUTION: To get full credit, make sure the volume number or year of publication
matches exactly.

PART II:  Investigating Individual Authorship

Find a biographical sketch of an author using the online database titled Literature
Resource Center.
It is preferable if this person is the author of one of the books
you plan to cite in your term project.

Attach a print of up to the first three pages, and on this print highlight what you
believe to be this author's most important credentials.

PART III:  Investigating Corporate Authorship

NOTE:
Organizations can be a good source of primary information on most any
               topic.

Use Encyclopedia of Associations (available at the reference desk) to find an
organization associated with your topic and which produces at least one publication,
and give the following:

1. FULL name of the organization:

2. FULL title of ONE publication:

3. An email address, mailing address, or phone number:

PART IV:  Investigating Quality of Books and Periodicals

1. a)  Use an online article database to find a reference to a book review article
on any book related to your research topic.  Attach a print of this reference.
(HINTDo a keyword Boolean search including the keywords "book" and
         "review" in your search statement)

    b)  Use the paper version of Book Review Digest to find a reference to a book
review article on any book related to your topic.  Attach a photocopy of the
page with the reference of your choice highlighted.

NOTE:  The paper version of Book Review Digest for years 1985 to the
present is found on reference table 3.  For pre-1985, go to the reference stacks
         at Ref Z 1219.C962.

2. NOTE: Knowing by name which periodicals deal with which subject areas helps
immensely in locating articles on a given research topic.

Examine the book, Magazines for Libraries (ask for it at the reference desk).
Locate the description of one periodical which publishes articles particularly
related to your topic (preferably a periodical you plan to cite in your term project)
and give the information requested below.
