 Library & Internet Skills Exercise

Objectives:  Students will be able to:

I.  Using the Library Web

Use the Stewart Library Web site (http://library.weber.edu) to answer questions 1-6. Ask for help at any time!

1)  Look under About. How late is the library open on Sundays this semester? 

2)  At the top right side of the the screen, click on Help. Then look to the top left and click on Ask a Librarian. List two ways you can get online research assistance. 

3)  From this same page, click on Telephone or in Person. What are the phone numbers for the Reference Desk?

4)  At the top of the screen, click on Quick Links,  then on Ereserve. Prof. Ewert has some material on electronic reserve (ereserve) for several courses. What is the first course listed?

5)  Click on Home at the very top left of the screen. Where do you go to request a book from another library? (Hint: think of it as a loan between libraries)

6)  Click on Home. Click on Information Literacy. Click on How Do I...

II.  Using Academic Search Elite to Find Full Text Articles 

Academic Search Elite
is a general article database that will help you find full text newspaper, popular magazine and academic journal articles on most subjects. 

7)  Circle one of the following topics to research for this exercise:

Select  two or more words that best describe your topic and write them here. These are your "keywords." (Example: "time management" and "students")

Use the following instructions to search the Academic Search Elite database and find a  full text article on the topic you circled above. 

To access
Academic Search Elite

Begin at the Stewart Library home page (http://library.weber.edu) and click on the following: 
  • Double click on the Internet Explorer Icon on the desktop
  • You will see the WSU Library home page at the following URL (uniform resource locator) http://library.weber.edu
    • Under Quick Links, click on Database Finder
    • Click on Academic Search Elite

 

To use
Academic Search Elite

  • Type a word or words that best describe your topic (use your keywords above) into the Find box. Use the Boolean AND  (for example: Utah AND Olympics) to limit and focus your search or select "all the words" 
  • Notice that you may also use items under the Refine Search tab to limit your search by
    • Selecting Full Text articles (the complete article is online)
    • Selecting scholarly Peer Reviewed or Refereed articles
  • After entering your keywords, Click on Search

Carefully review your results. If you didn't find what you need, try other words and ask for assistance in refining your search. 

Review the results. Select one citation related to your topic

8) Write the title of the article you found.

9) Write the title or journal name (source) of the periodical (magazine,  journal, etc.) it is in.

10) Print a copy of the article citation, NOT the full text.  

III. WSU's Information Literacy Competency Requirement

From the Stewart Library Web site (http://library.weber.edu) click on Information Literacy  and then on Information Literacy Requirement to answer the following questions:

12) List 2 possible ways for a student to meet the WSU information literacy competency requirement?
