Experimentaremos la cultura de España mediante lecturas, música, el Internet y otros medios comunicativos. Libro:  Francisco Ugarte, España y su civilización, quinta edición actualizada Requisitos Tareas 25 pts. Constará de la indicada en el calendario, más la asignada durante la clase. Es muy importante que cada estudiante acabe su tarea antes de empezar la clase.  Bajo ninguna circunstancia se aceptará la tarea entregada después de la fecha.   Parte de la tarea incluirá la asistencia a una función cultural relacionada con la cultura de España. Participación 10 pts. Este curso se conduce parcialmente por la discusión; por lo tanto, la participación activa de cada estudiante es esencial para el éxito del curso. Para poder participar completamente hay que preparad las lecturas y asistir a clase.  Para poder participar a cualquier nivel es imprescindible el asistir a clase; por lo tanto,  la ausencia afectará negativamente la nota de participación. La puntualidad también será un factor determinante. Antes de venir a clase debes leer las secciones indicadas en el calendario y realizar los ejercicios relacionados con las mismas. La participación incluye la asistencia y la participación en clase relacionada con las lecturas y los ejercicios. El ambiente de la clase será abierto y respetuoso,  sin que se silencien las opiniones de unos estudiantes en favor de las de otros. Se espera que los estudiantes colaboren en mantener este ambiente. Cada estudiante podrá perder hasta 3 clases (justificadas o no). Después de esto, recibirá una reducción de 5 puntos de la nota final por cada día perdido. Presentación 10 pts. Cada estudiante hará una presentación audiovisual durante el semestre sobre un aspecto cultural que le interese.  Consultad conmigo antes de investigar el tema. Cada presentación deberá ir acompañada de una página resumen para entregar a los compañeros que incluirá los puntos esenciales y la bibliografía. Exámenes parciales 35 pts.   Incluirán el material estudiado hasta ese momento. Mirad el calendario para las fechas.   Trabajo de investigación / Proyecto final 20 pts.  Se escribirá sobre un tema de interés personal. Deberá contener una lista de obras citadas que incluya como mínimo 4 obras, artículos de revistas especializadas, páginas de Internet y  libros. Se usará el formato MLA.  Se valorará el contenido, organización, mecánica, gramática y ortografía.  Nota final Participación 10 puntos Exámenes 35 puntos Tareas 25 puntos Presentación 10 puntos Trabajo de investigación 20 puntos   Classroom Policies Academic Honesty         It is expected that students will submit their own work. A complete description of cheating and plagiarism can be found in the WSU Student Code (Section IV, Part D, Paragraph 2). Plagiarism will result in failure on an assignment or in the course, depending on its severity.         On the other hand, students are encouraged to collaborate on assignments and to have others in the class read their work and give comments and suggestions before turning work in, but each student must submit their own work. Two copies of the same work is considered a collusion. Special Needs Students with medical, psychological or learning limitations or disabilities who desire academic adjustments or accommodations, must contact Services for Students with Disabilities (tel. 626-6413). This contact should occur at least ten days prior to the time an academic adjustment or accommodation is needed. Late Work No late work accepted.  Homework is due at the beginning of the period on the day indicated in this syllabus. Exceptions to this policy must be arranged beforehand. Make-Up Work Any valid reason for missing class, an assignment, or an exam due to truly extenuating circumstances should be presented to the instructor for consideration in advance of the activity in question, whenever reasonably possible. You may call me, use my voice mail or my e-mail to contact me in such an extenuating situation. If you desire a response from me, e-mail is most highly recommended. If you anticipate a problem, please talk to me about it as soon as possible. Computer Use Computer use in the classroom should never be devoted to personal tasks; otherwise, the participation grade will be zero. Emergency Closure If for any reason the University is forced to close for an extended period of time, we will conduct our class via WebCt. Look for announcements on your Weber e-mail. If you are not familiar with the Blackboard system, please review the student orientation available at http://wsuonline.weber.edu/students/orientation.asp. Please let me know by the end of the first week of the semester if you do not have access to a computer and/or the Internet from your home. E-mail You are responsible for checking your Weber e-mail or for having Weber messages forwarded to an account you do check. Core Beliefs According to PPM 6-22 IV, students are to “[d]etermine, before the last day to drop courses without penalty, when course requirements conflict with a student's core beliefs. If there is such a conflict, the student should consider dropping the class. A student who finds this solution impracticable may request a resolution from the instructor. This policy does not oblige the instructor to grant the request, except in those cases when a denial would be arbitrary and capricious or illegal. This request must be made to the instructor in writing and the student must deliver a copy of the request to the office of the department head. The student's request must articulate the burden the requirement would place on the student's beliefs.” Cell Phones Absolutely no cell phones allowed in class, and no text messaging. If you need to contact someone, leave the classroom. Department Assessment Policy The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures requires a final portfolio from all graduating majors during the last semester of their senior year. If you are a major or a minor, or are even considering becoming a foreign language major, please save (on computer disk if possible) at least one example of your best work from this class and all other language classes you take towards fulfillment of your major.
