· Mejorar la comunicación en español, concretamente en situaciones relacionadas con los servicios médicos.
· Beneficiarse de un aprendizaje basado en la comunidad hispana, identificando y comprendiendo sus necesidades relacionadas con la sanidad.
· Recapacitar sobre el concepto de "responsabilidad cívica".
· No es una clase de medicina ni una clase sólo de vocabulario. Es una clase de lengua y cultura.

Habrá un examen de medio curso y otro final. Reflejarán vocabulario, gramática y contenidos aprendidos en clase.
Presentaciones, 10 puntos
Se dará la información en clase. Habrá dos durante el semestre.
Mini pruebas y tareas, 10 puntos
Distribuidas durante el semestre habrá varias pruebas del vocabulario estudiado en casa.
La tarea se dará en clase.
Reacciones, 25 puntos
Durante el semestre los estudiantes escribirán 5 reacciones basada en experiencias personales a presentaciones dadas en clase o servicio a organizaciones comunitarias. Se valorará el contenido, la organización, la gramática y el vocabulario.
Participación, 15 puntos
Antes de venir a clase debes leer las secciones indicadas en el calendario y realizar los ejercicios relacionados con las mismas. La participación incluye la asistencia y la corrección en clase de estos ejercicios.
El ambiente de la clase será abierto y respetuoso, sin que se silencien las opiniones de unos estudiantes a favor de las de otros. Se espera que los estudiantes colaboren en mantener este ambiente.
Trabajo final/Servicio, 30 puntos
Consistirá en un trabajo escrito, reflexionando sobre la experiencia de servicio a la comunidad (20 horas como mínimo), las 5 reacciones revisadas, más la evaluación del estudiante que hará el coordinador del servicio. Para obtener más detalles, pulsa aquí.
Make-up work: Any valid reason for missing class, an assignment, or an exam due to truly extenuating circumstances should be presented to the instructor for consideration in advance of the activity in question, whenever reasonably possible. You may call me, use my voice mail or my e-mail to contact me in such an extenuating situation. If you desire a response from me, e-mail is most highly recommended. If you anticipate a problem, please talk to me about it as soon as possible.
Late work: Homework is due at the beginning of the period on the day indicated in this syllabus. Exceptions to this policy must be arranged beforehand.
Academic Honesty: It is expected that students will submit their own work. A complete description of cheating and plagiarism can be found in the WSU Student Code (Section IV, Part D, Paragraph 2). Plagiarism will result in failure on an assignment or in the course, depending on its severity. On the other hand, students are encouraged to collaborate on assignments and to have others read their work and give comments and suggestions before turning work in.
Students with Disabilities. Students with medical, psychological or learning limitations or disabilities who desire academic adjustments or accommodations, must contact Services for Students with Disabilities (tel. 626-6413). This contact should occur at least ten days prior to the time an academic adjustment or accommodation is needed.
Department Assessment Policy: The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures requires a final portfolio from all graduating majors during the last semester of their senior year. If you are a major or a minor, or are even considering becoming a foreign language major, please save (on computer disk if possible) at least one example of your best work from this class and all other language classes you take towards fulfillment of your major.
Cell Phones: Absolutely no cell phones nor text messaging allowed in class.
Extended Campus Closure: In the event of an extended campus closure I will continue to provide instruction by utilizing the Blackboard online course system. I will provide text-based mini-lectures on the same days as our regular classes meet each week and will expect you to login to the system on a regular basis to keep up with coursework. Assignments will be provided through the online system with clear due dates and expectations. Discussions will be made available to allow you to interact with other students and me about course material, and your participation in them will become part of your participation grade. I will check email within the Blackboard course on a daily basis should you need to communicate with me personally. If you are not familiar with the Blackboard system, please review the student orientation available at

Please let me know by the end of the first week of the semester if you do not have access to a computer and/or the Internet from your home.
