For each 75 point presentation:
Prepare a 10 minute presentation on the agreed upon topic:
All topics must be accepted by me before the outline & bibliography are turned in.
- Focus on one or two aspects of the topic.
- You may work together with another person to study a topic across a wider region.
- For example, you could examine genocide or UN responses to humanitarian crises.
- If you work together, each person must present for 10 minutes. So two people would present for a total of 20 minutes. Each person must also turn in a separate bibliography with an outline of their portion of the presentation.
- You may use A/V materials, web pages and limited power point if you wish. They are NOT required.
- If you need to use the CD/DVD/VHS please let me know when you turn in your bibliography & outline so I can make sure they're working
- If you’d like websites added to the class webpages, email the links and any text to me at least 1 week before the presentation. If you mail them later, I’ll try to add them, but don’t promise.
- You will need to show location on a map - web, print, powerpoint, etc.
- One week before the presentation, turn in an outline of the points you will cover.
- One week before the presentation, turn in a bibliography of sources used. Sources listed on the Bibliography must relate directly to the presentation and must include:
- at least six articles from professional journals:
- Professional = academic = scholarly = peer reviewed.
- You may also use Smithsonian, National Geographic, Archaeology, & Natural History. Check ejournals for online availability.
- Good databases to check are: Academic Source Premier and JSTOR. Depending on your topic, other databases such as business or health may be useful.
- at least four additional articles from an African news source - as defined in the news assignment
- at least four additional article from a Western news source - as defined in the news assignment
- at least six other sources of your choice - websites are okay, but be prepared to define their value.
- In other words, why do you think the website you've chosen is a reputable, credible source? The authors? The content?
- Use Turabian/Chicago or APA style in your citations. I don't care if you have every period or comma correct, but I want all the necessary information there and a consistent format.
OR
You may do an annotated bibliography and use fewer sources.
- 3 articles from professional journals - each one with an anotation.
- 2 articles from an African news source - each one with an anotation.
- 2 articles from a Western news source - each one with an anotation.
- 3 additional sources of your choice - each one with an anotation.
Each annotation must include a summary of the source plus your evaluation of the credibility, usefulness and value of the source.
- For more information on doing annotations, see the Annotated Bibliographies guide from OWL at Purdue.
- For more information on evaluation, see the Stewart Library Guide.
Place your presentation in time & space:
Presentations will be graded as papers are - on content, organization, sources, presentation, and so on.
For the 40 point presentation:
Do as above, but only give a 5 minute presentation. For sources:
- at least three articles from professional journals as above
- at least two additional articles from an African news source as above
- at least two additional article from a Western news source as above
- at least three other sources of your choice as above
- Use Turabian/Chicago or APA style in your citations.
